Window resize glitch and Java problem

Postby Stormtrooper » Sat May 12, 2012 15:39

Hi, I'm new to the forum and quite new to Linux too :)

I'm using KDE and my graphics card is ATI Radeon HD 5450.

When I resize a window, the window gets messed up. It either turns black or it shows my desktop background and some artefacts in the window. I think it has something to do with desktop effects. The problem sometimes disappears if I change desktop effects settings but after reboot it's back again.

I didn't have this problem earlier so it probably appeared after some updates.

If I resize my browser's (Chromium or Konqueror) window while running some Java applet, it freezes the applet and I have to refresh the page.

On Firefox I can't run Java at all because the browser crashes every time.

It is maybe a problem in the graphic driver card.
Do you know which driver you use for your graphic card ?

You can try to see it by :
Code: Select all
eselect opengl list

Or look in the Xorg.log file :
Code: Select all
egrep -i " connected|card detect|primary dev" /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Looks like ATI's driver is in use:
Code: Select all
Available OpenGL implementations:
  [1]   ati *
  [2]   nvidia
  [3]   xorg-x11

I tried the others but they don't seem to work any better.

I had a similar problem but under gnome-3.
I just updated the ati driver to 12.3 and the artfact is dispeared.

You can try to use the open source driver by select xorg-driver and remove the xorg.conf file.
To see if you use the opensource driver, check if you have the module "radeon" loaded.

I already have ATI 12.3.

I tried the open driver and removed the xorg.conf, but the "radeon" module wasn't loaded. After a couple of reboots the X didn't start anymore, so switched back to original driver and then X started again. But the problem still exists and I don't know how to make it load the radeon module.

You can check if radeon module is not blacklisted in /etc/modprobe.d/blacklist.conf

I checked the blacklist.conf and didn't find it there.
