Right, I've got a fully updated system, there are no updates available for my computer.

When I log in as a standard user, me,

Desktop Result
Default Returns to login screen
Xsession Returns to login screen
XFCE Returns to login screen
Fluxbox Login sucessful
Gnome Generates an error message

When I log in as root

Default Returns to login screen
Xsession Returns to login screen
XFCE Login successful
Fluxbox Login successful
Gnome Generates an error message

Does anyone have a clue where to go next???

Logs are available, but please say which ones will be handy. I've installed the prog that saves the log files.

Thanks loads

Some logs would be nice, more information is definitely necessary, but I'll bite.

I would delete the corresponding folders from your normal users home directory and try again.

/home/user/.xfce
/home/usr/.gnome*

etc (I don't have all these installed on my current system, so use your own judgement as to which hidden folders you should delete.

Also, try doing a libtest
Code: Select all
#equo libtest

The path Stupot wrote is incorrect. The path for the xfce-config is:
/home/yourUserName/.config/xfce4

Hi, I've just created log links for all 01 to 11 of the sabutil menu, but have managed to lose them.

I'll try again tomorrow.

Do you need all 11 of them, or are some more usefull than others??

Right, thanks for the above.
/home/martin/.config/xfce4 and /home/martin/.gnome* have been cast to the bin, and libtest has been run, unfortunatly, I didn't save the output, but the last thing it said was "System is healthy"

I'm now going to logout and back in again, see you in a while......

I will try and create the required log files again and post them up.

OK here are the log files from sabutil menu when run as root:
01
02
03 it does talk of this being run as martin rather than root. Would that be any help??
04
05
06
07
08
09
10
11

As being a complete novice at this, will you need all 11 of the log files for you to help me with the problem??

I'm not sure, but it looks like there is a permissions problem.

You said this /home/ was reused from a previous install, right?

Can you check and see if /home/martin/.config/xfce4 has been created. If permissions are set up right, it should exist now that you have tried to log into xfce after deleting it.
