X server is dead after last update

Postby matteo » Thu Apr 29, 2010 15:32

In the morning, I had alert, that there's 52 new updates. As always, I opened Sulfur, updated everything and closed the system. 2 hours later, I powered on my laptop (Dell Inspiron 1545), and everythings was great (Alt+F2 and everywhere was "OK"), but X server didn't start :| I only can login in text-mode and when I type "startx" I get:

Code: Select all
Fatal server error:
no screens found

giving up
xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error

I don't know, what is going on and how to fix it... I didn't change anything with hardware and i did not change any system settings today  Is there any chance for fix it - I dont want to reinstall system. Thanks in advance.

Some logs would help, (dmesg, Xorg.0.log, xdm.log) also some more specifications about your system and version of Sabayon.
In the meantime here are a few steps to try (as root):
Code: Select all
equo conf update

Code: Select all
equo deptest

Code: Select all
equo libtest

I tried to follow the clues from: viewtopic.php?f=76&t=20492#p116105
but when i opened these files i can't found any "i915.modeset" or "Option "AccelMethod" "UXA""

A new kernel featuring KMS for Intel enabled will be out soon.
In the meantime, please add "modeset=1" to your boot arguments (by either editing /boot/grub/grub.cfg (or grub.conf) or appending the string at boot).

Code: Select all
eselect opengl list

I hope it will be out soon... I need my computer and can not afford to spend a half of my day with such a stupid problem
I tried to edit grub.conf and add "modeset=1" or "i915.modeset=1", but still everything is the same.

heh, blame kernel/Xorg developers for such nice surprises
You can switch back to "vesa" drivers for today. Open /etc/X11/xorg.conf and change Driver "intel" with Driver "vesa".

Rather than start a new topic...

I have a similar issue with the device driver "fglrx" for ATI. The X server would not start but the error was different. X reported it could not load the dri module, (module dri not found,0). This started after the updates yesterday (4-28-2010). I switched to the vesa driver, it loads fine, and that is what I am using now, although the vesa display is not as distinct as when I used fglrx.
