Sabayon Core edition setup?

Post by xdemo » Fri Apr 23, 2010 8:52

I've been wanting to check out minimal distributions (like arch) for a while now because i love using fluxbox as my window manager, but always dislike the gnome apps/environment which i never use.

I'm pretty confident i can setup an install of sabayon core 5.2, but theres 2 things i have never done before and would like to know how :D

1. How can i connect to the internet via a wireless router from a terminal/console. I only know how to bring up/down an interface and to scan using iwlist amongst other things. I have always used nm-applet for connecting to the internet in a desktop environment so haven't really encountered this before.

2. Once i am connected to the repositories in sabayon core, what is a very basic packages that i can use to get a fluxbox desktop running. Things like xorg etc (and will xorg need much tweaking? All past distributions i have used are preconfigured)

Thanks for reply.
Sabayon 5.2 x86_64 w/ fluxbox

To connect to the internet via a wireless router, I would search the Sabayon and Gentoo wiki for information and also look at wpa-supplicant. You can configure it using some configuration file(s) and let it auto connect at boot.

For the fluxbox package you could perform a search using equo

Code: Select all

equo search fluxbox
If you install the package using equo it will automatically install all needed dependencies

update equo

Code: Select all

equo update
install X:

Code: Select all

equo install xorg-x11
install slim:

Code: Select all

equo install slim
install flux:

Code: Select all

equo install fluxbox
edit xdm:

Code: Select all

# nano /etc/conf.d/xdm
and there change: DISPLAYMANAGER='slim'
add xdm to init: su rc-update add xdm default

Nothing wrong with me.
I wasn't able to check the forums for a while and I am skimming through the 300+ unread threads.
The question is only 1 month old, so it could still be relevant to the person asking the question or someone searching for the same. I find it frustrating myself if you are searching for an answer and find a post which exactly describes your problem, but no answer... So I try to contribute where I can, even if the question is from some time ago

Well, it's June 6th, and your post gave me exactly the information I was looking for about how to set up a desktop from a minimal installation. Thanks!
