Hello, another error 256

ummm... yeah i have a few questions, i made the changes to my grub file, but i still have the problem.
this is frustrating because i have never had this problem before with linux and i have no idea if what im looking at is correct:

Code: Select all

# /etc/default/grub
# If you change this file, run 'grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg' afterwards to update
# /boot/grub/grub.cfg.

GRUB_DEFAULT=saved
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR="Sabayon"
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
GRUB_TIMEOUT=10

# Add your extra parameters here below
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=""
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""

# Uncomment to disable graphical terminal (grub-pc only)
# GRUB_TERMINAL=console

# The resolution used on graphical terminal
# note that you can use only modes which your graphic card supports via VBE
# you can see them in real GRUB with the command `vbeinfo'
[email protected]
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep
GRUB_BACKGROUND="/usr/share/grub/default-splash.png

# Uncomment if you don't want GRUB to pass "root=UUID=xxx" parameter to Linux
#GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_UUID=true

# Uncomment to disable generation of recovery mode menu entrys
# GRUB_DISABLE_LINUX_RECOVERY="false"

# Default wallpaper image path
GRUB_WALLPAPER="/usr/share/grub/default-splash.png"

# Boot menu option normal color
GRUB_COLOR_NORMAL="white/black"

# Boot menu option "highlight" color
GRUB_COLOR_HIGHLIGHT="magenta/black"

# DO NOT REMOVE THIS IF YOUR GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX IS EMPTY
[[ -z "${GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX}" ]] && GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="`cat /proc/cmdline`"

Sorry for the wall of text.

Also when i run grub-install, it says there is no such command and everything works after reboot, just i don't have the pretty splash screen

Thank's!!! It worke!!! :D
Just editing the /etc/defaults/grub file as

Code: Select all

GRUB_DEFAULT=saved
GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR="Sabayon"
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=0
GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true
GRUB_TIMEOUT=10
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=""
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=""
[email protected]
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep
GRUB_BACKGROUND="/usr/share/grub/default-splash.png"
GRUB_WALLPAPER="/usr/share/grub/default-splash.png"
GRUB_COLOR_NORMAL="white/black"
GRUB_COLOR_HIGHLIGHT="magenta/black"
# DO NOT REMOVE THIS IF YOUR GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX IS EMPTY
[[ -z "${GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX}" ]] && GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="`cat /proc/cmdline`"
then running 'grub2-install' follwed by 'grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg'
of course everything made as superuser
:D

HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP

I have a dual boot with XP and I just finished the procedure madcow983 explained because I had the splash daemon eror code 256, I tried to run grub2-install /dva/sda2 up to sd5 but that did not work so I tried sda with no number even if my sda1 is on XP. Everything went fine , so it said. Then I ran "grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg" and it said something like everything ok or grub installation complete so I rebooted. To my surprise in the beautiful splash screen I am left with Windows XP only..... no more Sabayon, so I can't log in anywhere :(
Is there some way I can reverse the last grub changing or am I [email protected]@@ed UP :(
I already tried with the DVD to rescue the installation with the installer but when I go through the language options there is no rescue option. What Can I do? Please help :( :x :cry:

Should this really be marked solved if many people are getting the psychedelic LSD screen now after the "fix"?

Is there a simple way for affected users to revert to the version of Grub2 that was present with the original Sabayon 5.2 install from DVD?

The previous version of GRUB is called GRUB Legacy. i would also like to know this. My idea was to use a SuperGrubDisk, but i haven't tried this myself, because i'm afraid it could make things worse.

I can tell you that just installing grub from equo, doing grub-install, accepting the default config file and rebooting is not what you want to do. :D Grub did get installed, but had a problem with the default config file and wouldn't boot. However, if you adjust the grub config file, that might do the trick for you.

Maybe entropy needs to merge with NixOS' Nix or GoboLinux to bring Sabayon easy version control and seamless rollbacks so that it can take over the world. 8)
