grub splash daemon error 256 [Solved]

Post by warbltux » Wed Apr 14, 2010 3:29

After I upgraded to grub-1.98, the bootsplash image no longer appears and there is a message that says something like "splash daemon error 256" , the OS still boots, but I am wondering if there is a way to fix this and get the splashscreen back.

Code: Select all

# The resolution used on graphical terminal
# note that you can use only modes which your graphic card supports via VBE
# you can see them in real GRUB with the command `vbeinfo'
GRUB_GFXMODE=1024x768x32 ### use your resolution
GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep
GRUB_BACKGROUND="/usr/share/grub/default-splash.png"
#GRUB_THEME="/path/to/gfxtheme"

# Default wallpaper image path
GRUB_WALLPAPER="/usr/share/grub/default-splash.png"

add the changes you see above to /etc/default/grub

also before you reboot
run grub-install /dev/sda or whatever drive your booting from because your not actually running 1.98 till you install it to the harddrive :P also if you have linux as a second partition put /dev/sda* so sda1 sda2 etc to not overwrite your precious other bootloader.
then run grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg to generate the changes

happy hacking :D

btw I just fixed the same error on my machine

After also fixing this earlier i just want to point out that the line:
GRUB_GFXMODE=1024x768x32 ### use your resolution
should be
[email protected] ### use your resolution
(Note the @) otherwise grub-mkconfig will not create the relevant entries for the framebuffer in grub.cfg

Code: Select all

insmod ext2
set root='(hd2,3)'
search --no-floppy --fs-uuid --set f1eb0dd5-3c3a-47f5-bf48-6887a7015931
if loadfont /usr/share/grub/unicode.pf2 ; then
  set gfxmode=1024x768x32
  # vga= is deprecated, grub2 handles this just fine
  # making grub2 res == linux fb res
  set gfxpayload=keep
  insmod gfxterm
  insmod vbe
dunno mine still issues the above with what i gave you so don't know why it didn't issue the same for you but ether way atleast your all fixed! @warbltux: Please now put [Solved] at the title for the original post cheers.

also tested with what you suggested and it just changed gfxmode to but nothing else, i think you may not have generated your grub.cfg properly
grub-mkconfig will print to cmd so your welcome to check again also "@" I think is just as valid as "x"
hard to say anything about grub2 as there is virtually no documentation

Also, it should be mentioned that if grub-install command is missing, use grub2-install (as root), otherwise it'll say grub-install command missing regardless of your user privilege.

(If that was a real problem, maybe it's the screen resolution, maybe lower be better 800x600...)
