Yeah the box is a lil dated. Its a test box I use to run distros. But it runs everything very well and had a very high end DVI graphic card that I removed in favor of the current on board one coz it did not tie in with my KVM setup. With crunchbang and ubuntu it handles everything I throw at it with the open driver including up to 720. It only shows strain by the time I try to play anything 1080.

right now only smplayer plays and shows video and thats when I dig into the menus and select
Output driver: gl (fast- ATI cards)

You might want to try using the "radeon" or "radeonhd" driver (in xorg.conf).

For the latter you will need to: equo install xf86-video-radeonhd

I know that future Xorg and OS ati (in xorg.conf just "ati") + >=mesa-7 will work allot (like 1000%) better but its still in testing.

Thanks a ton Joost for taking the time to help me me through when my first install did not play video. I went back into all the docs you guys provide and also read some gentoo docs. Needless to say this gave me a lot of insight into the right options to choose when doing a fresh install. I redid the install and got the drivers from the limbo repo.

Now I have a working system and all seems to be ok. I just have one issue. I installed the system as one big partition coz the auto partition thing failed. However when I try to see how much space is left, the data does not make sense. I have a 160GB disk formatted as one partition. What I don't understand is why the ouput to the df -h command looks funny showing far less of the free space....

Code: Select all
[email protected] ~ $ df -h
Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
rootfs                 23G  6.2G   17G  28% /
/dev/sda1              23G  6.2G   17G  28% /
rc-svcdir             1.0M  152K  872K  15% /lib64/rc/init.d
udev                   10M  236K  9.8M   3% /dev
/dev/shm              1.9G  720K  1.9G   1% /dev/shm

Code: Select all
Disk /dev/sda: 160.0 GB, 160041885696 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 19457 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 = 8225280 bytes
Sector size (logical/physical): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
I/O size (minimum/optimal): 512 bytes / 512 bytes
Disk identifier: 0x00092488

Device Boot      Start         End      Blocks   Id  System
/dev/sda1   *           1       19457   156288321   83  Linux

Wow. That was great. I got more info than from the other command... Thanks. Seems I need to read a lot more to be comfy with this distro. I think its worth the time and effort though so shall keep learning. However one more question why are the results different coz I do get accurate info with that command on my other ubuntu test machine? Thanks. :D

Looks OK to me, I cannot explain why df -h would return such funny results.
