VLC quits upon being executed to play any video files

Postby parlotti » Wed Mar 31, 2010 21:09

Hello everyone,

I'm so happy to be here. I have been an ubuntu user for a few years now and distrowatch convinced me to give sabayon a shot. This is day 5 and all I can say is that IT ROCKS!!!! Don't know why I did not make this jump earlier coz at this rate I think my linux skills would have greatly improved. Anyway am here to stay Just have one little problem That I really need help with so here goes:

When I launch vlc to play any video file it opens for just a second and the quits all of a sudden. Failing to see nay error messages i launched it from the command line using the following command,

Code: Select all
vlc Real.Time.With.Bill.Maher.2010.03.26.HDTV.XviD-SYS.\[VTV\].avi $

it replied with the following output:

VLC media player 1.0.5 Goldeneye
[0x604098] main libvlc: Running vlc with the default interface. Use 'cvlc' to use vlc without interface.
QPainter::begin: Paint device returned engine == 0, type: 1
QPainter::begin: Paint device returned engine == 0, type: 1
[0x84d4a8] pulse audio output: No. of Audio Channels: 2
[????????] x11 video output error: X11 request 131.19 failed with error code 11:

Major opcode of failed request: 131 (XVideo)
Minor opcode of failed request: 19 ()
Serial number of failed request: 106
Current serial number in output stream: 107
Segmentation fault

Please read and advice I would love to fix this and enjoy a perfect system....

Thanks in advance.

Can you post any information about what video hardware you are using?

Also from a terminal:

Code: Select all
glxinfo | grep render

and
Code: Select all
eselect opengl list

And post that info back here.

So the reason vlc is NOT working properly here is because its using the Opensource ati driver with mesa and togheter they are not able to process this video.

Do you know if your onboard videochip (laptop I assume?) is able to work with fglrx? (ati-drivers closed source)

Nope I dont know if that's the case. But the box is an IBM thinkcenter with AMD64 and an onboard ATI card.

Let me ask it like this.

Do you know if that chipset is capeable of playing HD movies at all?
To me it seems a bit old.
Have you tried something like xvid instead? Did playback of HD movies work using some other distro and what driver did you use?

//edit: and it would be nice to know if some other player does work.
