Help! KDE isn't working well

Postby osuarezl » Sat Mar 27, 2010 4:07

Hi everyone!

I'm a bit confused with a problem. I got an Alieware m15x laptop two days ago. Yesterday I installed Sabayon 5.1 KDE 64.
My machine has an Core i7 processor, Nvidia GTX 260, 4Gbs ram.

After I updated everything a thing a bit strange started to happen. I log in on my KDE desktop, and then, after working for a while the screen shows trash all over, then it goes black, shows the Nvidia logo screen and takes me again to the log in screen. When I log in, all my programs (Firefox, DIA, etc) are not running. The problem repeats randomly. Some times I work for two hours and it happens, some times it just shows the desktop for one minute.

While I listened mp3's or watched youtube's videos I noticed that when it showed that trash on the screen about one second of the audio got looped for three times.

For now I'm ok working in Fluxbox, but I miss to use KDE in a stable way.

Anybody has the same problem, or any idea??

Now I have more clues. The problem always occurs when I'm playing a video in youtube. I'm aware that some people had issues with Firefox because an instruction not implemented in old x64 processors was called by flash videos. That could be a starting point to investigate. But I must insist, the problem also happens while running other programs (Firefox closed).

I'm going to find how to gather more information. I'll search for instructions not implemented like the old case.

Hi,
can you spot anything useful in /var/log/messages or in /var/log/Xorg.0.log?

Since it does not happen in fluxbox I think that it should be KDE4 related or it happens when the video
card is used in an intensive way (for example if you have activated the KDE effects).

Thanks a lot for your help! I'm really lost with this!. But also learning a lot of new stuff of linux so I'm not angry with this problem. :D

Ok I'll post the logs. The situation was: I opened Firefox, I played a youtube video to provoke the fail. Then I logged in again and searched in te Xorg log. I took the info and split the one I found useful to several files and made a backup of the complete log. Short after saving the info, again fail. So I made the process again to compare the information.
Also I made a backup of the messages log, I found interesting things there but I don't understad them very well.

If i understood, it closed my sesion and the su sesion I was using?? I think the problem is in the underscored part but I don't understood very well why ld-2.10.1.so(dynamic linker/loader ??) is generating an those problems with the kernel (prtect / seg fault).

Re: Help! KDE isn't working well

I've been experiencing this issue as well. I have an Alienware M15x with similar specifications (identical video card) and when running the Proprietary Nvidia driver, the X server will crash intermittently. As noted in the previous posts, it is easier to provoke a crash when playing YouTube or other Flash based applications.

In my case, this issue ONLY surfaces when running off of battery power. The issue has never been encountered while plugged-in. This leads me to believe that the problem could relate to an issue between the Nvidia driver and ACPI but I have not been able to get to the bottom of this. Also, I understand that this is a Sabayon forum but it is worth noting that I have run into this issue on the M15x hardware platform with OpenSuSE 11.2 & 11.3.

If anyone has a suggestion please let me know. Also, I'll keep hunting and update this post in the event I determine root cause.

Thanks

Just a quick follow-up. This is apparently not an ACPI issue. I've reproduce the behavior with and without the ACPI service running. The only consistent factor in my case thus far is being unplugged.

Hi,

Finally somebody with the same problem. This week has been bad for me, now KDE isn't loading at all. I login but inmediatly crash.. and again... the Nvidia logo and the the login screen.

I made a backup and now I'm trying a fresh install (again....).

I reported the bug ( http://bugs.sabayon.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1313 ).... Maybe you are interested in post something there. I'll keep looking for some solution.

Error happens to me even if the laptop is plugged in :(

For now, as working in Sabayon has became impossible, now I'm using fedora for work and Sabayon just for keep searching a solution to this problem.

Hello, so you are you are running Fedora on the M15x with the proprietary Nvidia drivers and not experiencing the X Server crashes in KDE? Just trying to track down some more information as I haven't found anything on the OpenSuSE forums yet.

Hi,

No, I wanted to avoid problems ... I'm using Gnome and I'm not using the Nvidia dirvers.

Good news to report, thus far. After much more process of elimination, I can safely say my issue relates to functionality provided by the proprietary Nvidia drivers.

Also, after even more research and testing, I think that I may have isolated the root cause. This seems to relate to Nvidia's "PowerMizer" functionality. By default, the PowerMizer Preferred Mode is set to Adaptive. After switching this setting to "Prefer Maximum Performance" I have not yet been able to reproduce the X server crash. I've switched back and forth between these settings numerous times and I can easily reproduce the crash but ONLY when unplugged AND running under Nvidia's PowerMizer "Adaptive" mode.

So, I'll continue to run under the "Prefer Maximum Performance" setting for the next few days and assuming the issue still doesn't surface, I think it is safe to say that the setting change is a good enough workaround (for me at least) and I'll proceed to file a bug report with Nvidia.

I'll update the thread in a few days with the final results.

I'm not sure if this is the same issue the original poster is experiencing but it could be worth a try in their case.

Thanks
