Installed Sabayon, cannot boot [Solved]

Postby kjlamkin » Sun Jan 03, 2010 18:34

Hey everyone, I'm new to Sabayon/Linux, so please forgive me. I installed Sabayon last night trying to do a dual boot. I used the LiveDVD to install. I have a 320 gig hard drive with 100gig partition that has Windows XP on it. I created a new partition in the empty space on the drive for Sabayon and formatted it to the ext4 file system. I then chose to install Sabayon to "/". Not sure if this is where my trouble started or not.
The installation completed successfully, but now when I try to boot, the computer loads only as far as a screen that says "GRUB _". From there nothing happens.

I've tried to reinstall the GRUB bootloader per instructions in another thread using the Sabayon LiveDVD...no luck. Anyone have any idea what I need to do to make this work?

If you need more info, please let me know and I'll do my best to get it to you.

THANKS!

Thanks for the suggestion. I was able to use that to get back into my windows installation. However, I am still unable to get into Sabayon. Every attempt I make comes up with errors that files are missing. I reinstalled Sabayon to see if that would fix it, but that didn't work. Could this be caused by a corrupted LiveDVD?

Have you checked the md5 of your disc

I checked the checksum of the iso...it is good. Burned a new dvd, checked that checksum...also good. I also reinstalled Sabayon, which it did complete successfully with no errors. I still get the "GRUB _" coming up after reboot and the computer then just sits at that screen. I can't seem to get anywhere with the Super Grub disc either...other than being able to boot windows with it.

Lets hope it is just something not correct in your grub.conf
Can you paste the contents of your grub.conf file, should look something like this (keep in mind that the sample I give here has Sabayon installed on sda11 and my swap partition is sda6 which will be totally different to yours, but apart from that and most of the comments being snipped, should be the same)
Code: Select all
### AUTOMAGIC BOOT DEVICE DETECTION END ###
default=0
timeout=5
splashimage=(hd0,10)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz

title Sabayon Linux (kernel-genkernel-x86_64-2.6.31-sabayon)

Did the live dvd run OK on your system before you installed Sabayon onto your hard drive (I presume it did)
What other hardware do you have (CPU, how much RAM and what Graphic card)
What Version Sabayon and is it a 32 bit (x86) or a 64 bit (amd64) install

The LiveDVD is running great! I'm using it right now to try to view the files you requested. That is one reason why I am really looking forward to getting this installed and running on the computer...from what I can tell so far it is already faster than my windows installation.

My computer is a Sony Vaio laptop. Pentium 4 3.06gHz, 768mb ram, ATi Radeon 345M (sharing 128mb of my system ram). I am currently attempting to install and run Sabayon 5.1 KDE 32bit x86.

As for the grub.conf file...it's blank (I'm guessing this could be a slight problem). I tried opening it with every program that I could think of just to be sure. Kwrite is the one I opened other files with. There should a screen shot below just to help make sure I'm not being to dumb with this.

When I did try to run any of the grub repairs using the Super Grub disc, I kept getting errors saying it couldn't find files. It was looking for the stage1, stage2, and fstab. It wasn't able to find any of these.

Thanks for your patience with me...my first time attempting linux on my own.

Ok...well, one thing I learned from reading other posts was the "sudo" command. I ran kwrite with the sudo command and opened the grub.conf file again. This time it had something in it...

Code: Select all
# grub.conf generated by the Sabayon Linux Installer
#
# Note that you do not have to rerun grub after making changes to this file
# NOTICE:  You do not have a /boot partition.  This means that
#          all kernel and initrd paths are relative to /, eg.
#          root (hd0,1)
#          kernel /boot/kernel-genkernel real_root=/dev/sda2
#          initrd /boot/initramfs-genkernel
### AUTOMAGIC BOOT DEVICE DETECTION -- DO NOT REMOVE ###
#boot=sda
### AUTOMAGIC BOOT DEVICE DETECTION END ###
default=0
timeout=5
splashimage=(hd0,1)/boot/grub/splash.xpm.gz

title Sabayon Linux (kernel-genkernel-x86-2.6.31-sabayon)
   root (hd0,1)

   initrd /boot/initramfs-genkernel-x86-2.6.31-sabayon
   savedefault

As a rule of the thumb if the live dvd runs in live mode then if installed via the Install to disk icon on the desktop
kjlamkin wrote:It was looking for the stage1, stage2,

I suspect that grub has not been installed correctly for some reason

Try this, load the live dvd and when it has finished loading

Double click Install on disk
Select your language
Click Forward
Select your keyboard
Click Forward
Select Fix an existing Sabayon Linux Installation
Select I accept the terms above
Select Sabayon Linux xxxxx (dev/sda2) from the drop down list (should be the only one)
Make sure that Bootloader reconfiguration is selected
Click Forward
Select Create new boot loader configuration
Click Forward
Make sure that /dev/sda Master Boot Record (MBR) is selected
Click Forward
Click Forward
reboot

Also worth mentioning that sabayon is not ubuntu, we do not use sudo, we use su, a lot of the commands used in sabayon are chained commands of which sudo will only implement the first of leaving you with a broken incomplete command.
