Sabayon Sound - why is it special?

Postby gav989 » Wed Dec 09, 2009 13:03

Hi, first post and first time using a linux distro as my main OS.

Sick of the microsoft monopoly I decided to try an open source way of life, loving it so far. I began by trying several linux distros (ubuntu, mint, mandriva, fedora etc etc) and they all seemed ok, but on all of them when a sound was played it came out of my speakers/headphones and my built in laptop speakers, a problem I found a lot of people on forums were having and one which no-one had solved in terms i understood or without soldering stuff onto their motherboard. when i tried sabayon however, the sound just worked as it did in windows. volume had the same range and when i had speakers/headphones plugged into it the laptop speakers ceased output.

what is different about sabayon that makes this happen?

Sabayon uses pulseaudio by default -- most other distros do not

Installing pulseaudio on a debian distro or fedora is easy if you want to do it

oh right, interesting. lots of people were trying to reconfigure alsa mixer to sort it. i'll stick with sabayon anyway because it was my favourite for other reasons too. thanks for the tip though

Yes, Sabayon now, in recent versions uses PulseAudio.
but ALSA, when good configurated, Works well also.
my comp.works both in Pulseaudio and in alsa.
