Cannot start Kate, KWrite from Konsole in root mode [Solved]

Postby Wildcat » Sun Dec 06, 2009 19:03

Hi Everybody!
My problem is:
My computer is a dual boot machine what has an Ubuntu 8.04.3 and the Sabayon 5
The Ubuntu 8.04.3 got a kernel update. Update was successful, but after the new start I cannot see the new kernel in Grub menu. I've check the ubuntu /boot partition, the new kernel there was too, but the Sabayon's grub cannot updated. Ok. Not a problem, I will add the new kernel entry manual to menu.lst. Open a Konsole and type
Code: Select all
su
given my passw and
Code: Select all
kwrite /boot/grub/menu.lst

And nothing happened. Only Ctrl C helped me. The KWrite wasn't start in root mode. Anybody can tell me how can I modify my menu.lst from root mode? Or how can I start the Kwrite, Kate, and so on from root mode?
From a single user mode it is work, but I cannot save the file. (I have not any rights for write in /boot/grub/menu.lst...)
(Yes I found the graphical GRUB editor, but that is so slow, and if I would modify other system file (for example smb.conf), I never can do after it from Konsole?)
Please help!

From a Konsole/Terminal window:

Code: Select all
$ kdesu kwrite

and enter the root user's password in the pop-up window.

Or, alternatively, use nano editor as root user:

Code: Select all
# nano /boot/grub/grub.conf

(menu.lst is just a symlink to grub.conf in SL).

And no error message, nothing, just hanging: a perfect example of the oddites and "friendliness" that KDE has been synonymous with for me for a long time.

If you tried to do the same under GNOME by firing its default GUI editor

Code: Select all
gedit /boot/grub/menu.lst

gedit would have started (throwing to your terminal a mass of diagnostic messages by the way).

On a more serious note: any terminal based editor would have worked so you should consider changing the thread title to something like: Cannot start Kwrite, Kate from Konsole in root mode

That is actually quite simple, you switched user but did not switch its environment what is apparently quite important here.

try
Code: Select all
su -

authenticate and then run your apps.
