After the update Sabayon stopped booting up

Post by gocool » Wed Jun 20, 2018 0:42

I cannot login to my machine to get any log files.

I see two other posts with similar issue I think. So basically the update broke my system. Don't we test the system before rolling out.

My machine is current and uses KDE PLasma.

We sure do. I'm running KDE on sabayon-limbo and have had no problems. Obviously we can't test out every hardware combination, but we do have testers.

Hi

I did a fresh install with Sabayon_Linux_18.05_amd64_GNOME.iso on multiboot together
other GNU/Linux distros and it worked very well.

But after I run Sabayon update it did not boot any more.

I tried Ctrl+Alt+F1 but it did work.

As explained on other topic , your problem is nVidia GTX 570

Nvidia dropped GPU 500 Series support. You must back to x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-390.42 drivers and mask newer versions

Code: Select all

# equo i '<x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-396' --ask

Then you can mask nvidia-drivers-396.24 and newer
if /etc/entropy/packages/package.mask doesn't exist :

Code: Select all

# cp /etc/entropy/packages/package.mask.example /etc/entropy/packages/package.mask
And

Code: Select all

# equo mask '>=x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-396.24'
if CTRL+ALT+F1 won't works ,please try CTRL+ALT+F2 or F3 ... by default you have up to 7 Virtual Consoles available (F1..F7)

At boot you can try to running "nomodeset" in the boot command line

Hi sabayonino

Thank you a lot.

Ctrl+Alt+F1 or F2...F7 did not work.

I reinstalled Sabayon.

Hi sabayonino

I followed your information and now Sabayon boot without any problem.
Nvidia dropped GPU 500 Series support. You must back to x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-390.42 drivers and mask newer versions

# equo i '<x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-396' --ask

Then you can mask nvidia-drivers-396.24 and newer
if /etc/entropy/packages/package.mask doesn't exist :

# cp /etc/entropy/packages/package.mask.example /etc/entropy/packages/package.mask

And

# equo mask '>=x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-396.24'
I have masked also those packages

# equo upgrade

For some reason nvidia-drivers 390.42 (and nvidia-userspace 390.xx) are masked

Code: Select all

# equo unmask '=<x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-390.42' '=<x11-drivers/nvidia-userspace-390.42'
and make sure nvidia-drivers 396.xx will be masked

Code: Select all

# equo unmask '>=x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers-396.424 '>=x11-drivers/nvidia-userspace-396.24'
Note the single quotes in the package names !

and /etc/entropy/packages/package.{mask,unmask} must be exist .

I've masked 396.xx and unmask 390.xx drivers and then try to update :

Code: Select all
