useless brightness slider

Postby pinkytoes » Mon Mar 10, 2014 0:45

the system tray pulldown has a volume slider which works fine
and a brightness slider that appears to do nothing at all.
any ideas?

so several updates have managed to break my wifi
but so far none of them seem to have fixed the slider
that controls screen brightness in the system tray.
is there some setting i need to change to make it work?

Which desktop environment are you talking about, GNOME shell? There is a slider for settings the brightness of your display. I am not familiar with other desktops (KDE, XFCE, LXDE, Cinnamon) maybe they have a slider for that too. Please give some more details about the system you are using so someone can help you.

sorry i should make a sig with my hw/sw specs on it
viewtopic.php?f=86&t=31483

i just installed Sabayon GNOME (64bit) on my acer v5 571p

the problem is not a lack of slider, but the lack of change affected by it
the system tray pulldown slider, power saving slider, keyboard hotkeys.
all have zero effect on the brightness of the flourescent behind my monitor.
which is fine most of the time, but around twilight it's a headache maker.

Hi,
To help isolate the problem, could you try to change the brightness manually, e.g.:
As root.
Maintain a terminal with (assuming systemd) journalctl -f output to see if there are relevant kernel messages:
Code: Select all
journalctl -f

Code: Select all
cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness

Code: Select all
echo 2000 > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness && cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness

Please, provide the results.

If you are running a kernel from 3.13 series (latest revisions), I've been experiencing a similar problem here which was solved by switching to a 3.14 one.

@ashtophet
i think this is what you meant:

Code: Select all
# cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
976
# echo 2000 > /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness && cat /sys/class/backlight/intel_backlight/brightness
bash: echo: write error: Invalid argument

Code: Select all
fprintd[6719]: ** Message: D-Bus service launched with name: net.reactivated.Fprint
fprintd[6719]: ** Message: entering main loop
gdm-password][6724]: gkr-pam: unlocked login keyring

six items in my system tray pulldown

Code: Select all
Volume
Brightness
Wifi
Location
Bluetooth
Battery

five of which work perfectly.
