mplayer

There was an old topic on this board asking why mplayer was removed from Entropy. Someone said that it was no longer managed, and wasn't even in Portage anymore. Since that post, there have been three new versions of mplayer, and it was added back to the Gentoo repositories.

I know this would probably be better suited as an entry in the bug tracker, but I kind of wanted to get some sort of opinion or answer on the board first. Why hasn't mplayer been added back yet?

I installed Anki to try and learn some Japanese, but the decks I downloaded have audio files, and Anki won't play them without mplayer installed. Even though the dependencies for Anki in Entropy have mpv listed, and I have mpv installed, it won't play audio without mplayer.

I don't know whether to file a Sabayon bug to get mplayer added back, or post on the Anki support forums asking for mpv support. I suppose I could just install mplayer via Portage, but that could just open up a whole other mess.

Mplayer was removed from entropy 'cause it depends from ffmpeg (Sabayon has libav as codec-suite)
MPlayer 1.3.0 is compatible with the FFmpeg 3.0.x releases and (at the time of writing) with FFmpeg git. The tarball already includes a copy of FFmpeg 3.0, so you don't need to fetch it separately.

There's recent discussion in Sabayon Mailing List about switch back to ffmpeg : https://lists.sabayon.org/pipermail/dev ... 09436.html

Can you prove that somehow? Isn't it just a missing codec/plugin? Do you get any error message, something useful in the logs, debug console? Can you give some more info on the audio files? What do file and avprobe say?

mplayer was removed probable because is only ffmpeg dependent.... not works with the newer libav.

ffmpeg is deprecated in Sabayon and removed.

In my tests I installed smplayer, but it needed mplayer to work

in fact, in my system, i was able to install mplayer and devede I used an "standalone" compiled mplayer version...

I made an Article, a Tutorial about how to install mplayer in Sabayon (without removing libav) this some days ago.... But it was written in Portuguese Language (i'm Brazilian):

Smplayer really does not require mplayer. Just open the preferences (Options -> Preferences or Ctrl-P) and set the multimedia engine on the general tab to mpv.
