Pc freezes after upgrade

Postby Beerforfree » Sat Oct 26, 2013 15:34

I'm fresh installing 13.08 on a brand new computer, everything works ok. On the last reboot after upgrading the notebook freezes the screen and nothing else can be done
I used 13.08 Xfce from a DVD which I already used with other notebook without any troubles. it doesn't come to the home screen after upgrading
With 13.08 Gnome it comes to the home screen after rebooting from updates and freezes there

Either the update is removing or adding some packages that cause this behavior. I repeat the process 3 times with same results, the upgrade takes very long since there are about 400 files for Gnome and more than 330 for Xfce

Notebook HP 2000 with AMD processor, original came with Win8 I had to disable secure boot to install Linux

Beerforfree, I've deleted your duplicate thread in the 'Installer Issues' shed. Please don't double-post as it results in split posting by responders and ultimately confusion. Also, if I read you correctly, your issue occurs after installation when you try to roll (upgrade) to the the latest packages by using Entropy, in which case your problem is not an Anaconda Installer issue anyway.

Do you have any extra peripherals attached to your computer? You are describing some really odd behavior that doesn't have a set way to reproduce it.

Not at all, it's just a brand new Notebook in which I ripped off Win8
There should be some way to debug and see where it stops
By the first forced rebbot I can see some lines on the screen .....cant be loaded..... or similar, but it doesn't appear again on further forced switch off. It goes so fast that's impossible to read

Hmm.... does it have an ATI GPU by any chance? I've been having trouble booting the SL LiveDVD with 13.08 and the Daily on one of my machines because the FGLRX driver does not work. Try booting a LiveDVD or LiveUSB created using the Daily ISO, and edit the kernel boot line. Delete the deprecated "vga=791" and replace it with "xdriver=radeon" to force the LiveDVD or LiveUSB to boot with the open-source Radeon driver instead of the closed-source FGLRX driver. See if it boots to a desktop. If it does, chances are the problem is the video driver. In which case, try installing from the Daily loaded with the Radeon driver.
