Upgrading to kernel 3.7 while doing an equo upgrade [Solved]

Postby gocool » Mon Jan 07, 2013 22:55

Hi Friends,
My Sabayon is current, or was till one hour ago.
I was under the impression that doing a - "equo update && equo upgrade --ask" will not upgrade the kernel unless we specifically do a "kernel-switcher".
But it came as a surprise that my update was attempting a kernel upgrade to 3.7
Doing a little research I figured out that the new kernel is being upgraded as part of the dependency for the package - "sys-apps/gpu-detector-2.6-r3" which was thrown in as part of the upgrade.

What is this sys-apps/gpu-detector-2.6-r3 package for?
And is there a way I can clear this or should I do a kernel-switcher and upgrade to 3.7?

Do advise.

Regards,
Gocool

I think it was downloaded the package only . not a real switch

check kernel version you are using :
Code: Select all
# uname -r

The update failed as there is no space left in the /boot volume.

I know it did not update, but my specific question is, what exactly is this gpu-detector?
If it only supports 3.7 then how to remove it from my download list?

For now my updates keeps showing "There is 1 update available" (that being this gpu-dector package). Say tomorrow I get another 100 updates, what will I do?

The only way I know is to do an "equo install update1 update2 update3...update100" which is cumbersome. For I wont be able to do a "equo upgrade", as it will fail again here at this one package requiring the kernel 3.7.

Am I right or am I missing something?

I don't think the kernel should be pulled in a part of the gpu-detector.

The gpu-detector is a part of the tools needed for the LiveDVD. You should be able to safely remove it without any consequences since you're not running the liveDVD.

Hmmm.... if "gpu-detector" is part of the live DVD then why did they push this update to all?

Do you think the team who were putting up the updates messed it up?

Because you already had gpu-detector installed. It's installed as a part of the standard installation and is very likely used on your first boot after installing to a hard drive.

The fact that you got the update is fine and doesn't hurt anything besides downloading a little extra. It shouldn't be pulling in a kernel though. That sounds like a messed up dependency. I could be wrong about that, but it's unlikely.

But you can remove the gpu-detector and then you won't receive any more updates for it.

P.S. I have gpu-detector uninstalled and can reboot and run everything just fine.

Thank you Stupot...I just posted it on the IRC and here you reply back with my answer.

Will do. And thank you for taking time to respond.

Sometimes running "equo cleanup" may help. But I don't know, wether the freed space is part of /boot …
As far as I know older/all kernels are stored there. Maybe you can just remove elder ones.

Another possibilities, if you want to use GPU detector.

The new version of GPU detector is a file that needs the Kernel version 3.7.
You may mask the package for not upgrade, as in the command:

Code: Select all
equo mask gpu-detector

Then, the package will remain in the old version.

Also, another possibility: You may try the new GPU detector, but without the new kernel. For this, you may try relax the deps, with the command:

Code: Select all
equo install gpu-detector --relaxed  -- pretend

If no Kernel 3.7 needed, but only other packages, you may try:

Code: Select all
equo install gpu-detector --relaxed

You also may try update only the GPU detector, without dependencies:

Code: Select all
equo install gpu-detector --nodeps

For fully update, change the kernel to 3.7, then re-install the GPU detector:

Code: Select all
equo install linux-sabayon
kernel-switch list
kernel-switcher switch 'the name of the new kernel'

reboot to new kernel, then:

Code: Select all
equo update
equo upgrade OR
equo install gpu-detector

Wow...Alberto...that surely is a DAMN good tutorial on equo and how powerful it is.
I wanna ask two questions

1. Is it worth upgrading to kernel 3.7? I have 3.6 right now.

2.Is this gpu-detector really useful for an installed machine, as I heard this is only good for live DVD
