Postby mik6 » Thu Mar 24, 2011 14:06

I did the updates this morning. Something got broken with the nvidia-driver on 2.6.38.
Ihad to go back to 2.6.37 and reinstall the nvidia driver. Just to let you know

This issue also effects the ati driver. It is being looked into by the devs right now.

What are the symptoms, precisely? Just after I logged in to KDE 4.6.1 I clicked on the Information applet icon on the Panel with a view to deleting the latest message. But nothing happened. I then used Ctrl-Esc and saw that the Plasma Desktop had crashed. I rebooted and logged in. The five icons duly appeared one-by-one on the KDE splash screen as usual but then... nothing for a long time. Eventually a black screen appeared with a pop-up message from Magneto. Even Alt-F2 does not work. I did Ctrl-Alt-F12 and saw that all was not well with the KDE Plasma Desktop (looks like a segfault to me.) I tried deleting ~/.kde4 but to no avail, so I'm currently in the process of re-installing all the kde-base packages (by using a Bash command and qlist, as there is no KDE set in Entropy as far as I know).

Is that what is happening to you? Or is my latest problem with KDE a coincidence?

Just got back home, got 19 new updates thru entrophy.
Then tries 2.6.38 and it worked. But now part of the update was Firefox 4. Firefox now broken had to re-install Firefox (bin).
something going on with the update process. As if Limbo was being use instead of main repository

All modules against that specific kernel were broken due a small change in the kernel that was made.
We didn't notice this until it was too late and immediately prepared new ones for Entropy.

This should be fixed now.

Not aware of a problem with firefox, working fine here.

I think something is still broken.

Yesterday I had a kernel oops and a plasma desktop segfault on my nettop (nvidia ION GPU) running KDE 4.6.1 fully upgraded via Entropy to kernel 2.6.38-r1 and nvidia-drivers-260.19.29#2.6.28-sabayon. I thought the problem was KDE, so wiped the disk, re-partitioned and re-installed from the KDE 5.5 LiveDVD and rolled to latest... and am back with a plasma desktop segfault and black screen.

did you mean you installed nvidia-drivers 260.19.29 #2.6.38 cause from what I see you installed the wrong video drivers for kernel 2.6.38 :)

My typo: I meant the Entropy package nvidia-drivers-260.19.29#2.6.38-sabayon. For kernel 2.6.37-sabayon the driver that worked on my nettop was either nvidia-drivers-260.19.36#2.6.37-sabayon or nvidia-drivers-260.19.29#2.6.37-sabayon, I can't recall which now.

The NVIDIA ION 330 is a combined GeForce 9400M GPU with an Intel Atom 330 CPU. Which Entropy package for the 2.6.38-sabayon kernel is the correct driver for the GeForce 9400M GPU?

I checked on the NVIDIA site and nvidia-drivers-260.19.* is definitely the correct driver for the ION in my nettop.

I have nvidia-drivers-260.19.29#2.6.38-sabayon installed and it works with Fluxbox (I'm typing this in Firefox 4 running under Fluxbox now), so the problem is not the video driver. X windows must be working (and hence the video driver) or I would not be able to see and use Firefox and the rest of the Fluxbox window manager. I can even run XBMC.

So I reckon the problem is with either KDE 4.6.1 or with the linux-sabayon-2.6.38-r1 kernel, or an incompatibility between them (perhaps they just need to be re-compiled). Yesterday I did equo update, equo upgrade and equo conf update to roll to the latest packages in the Entropy repository. That ran to completion successfully, but the same problem occurred as in my first post: kernel oops and KDE Plasma Desktop crash (segfault). One of the error messages on the console (Ctrl-Alt-F12) told me that the KDE Plasma Desktop was "tainted" and missing OEM data. Hence my suspicion that there is some problem with either the kernel or Plasma Desktop, and not the video driver. Anyway, I have kicked off another equo update and equo upgrade and, as I type this, 264 packages (mostly KDE 4.6.1) are being re-downloaded, so my guess is that they have been re-compiled by joost. I could be wrong of course, but I can't see another reason why essentially the whole of KDE 4.6.1 would be re-downloaded after I upgraded to it yesterday. I can carry on with Fluxbox for a while on this machine (I can still run XBMC on it, too) and wait to see what the problem is with KDE and/or the kernel.
