When will the mirrors get updated?

Postby vampirecoffee » Wed Nov 11, 2009 6:53

It seems like only pkg.sabayonlinux.org and the garr.it mirror have any of the packages from the latest updates. Considering that I switched away from using those first, because they refuse to give me download speeds greater than 20 Kb/s, I'd really like to know when the other mirrors will get updated. (My current download speed from pkg.sabayonlinux.org is on the order of bytes per second, which is unacceptably slow.)

What are the mirrors you don't find up-to-date?
We are reorganizing the dataflow to optimize bandwidth usage and we don't really want people to use our direct source if possible. Since people seem lazy to understand this, we had to enforce bandwidth limits.

To be fair, I don't think it's a case of people being "lazy to understand" it, I think it's more a case of people not understanding how downloading using a package manager and mirrors works, full stop. Most of the SL users just know that, to install package "foo" they have to enter the command:

Code: Select all
equo install foo

If it takes an unconscionably long time, they don't understand why and simply think the problem lies with the server supplying the package.

I think the OP was asking about this situation:

This is now the default behaviour after the notification applet notifies of updates. I do understand that it takes time for the mirrors to synch but it is irritating to have to keep coming back to update (sometimes only being successful several hours later). Would it be possible to put in some sort of delay in the update notification or a way of having the notifications tied to the mirrors being synched?

Then why don't you put newly updated packages on the mirrors? I've run into the situation that fitzcarrado has pointed out more than once, even when I've waited a day or two for the mirrors to update.
