wine is already in entropy and the notification applet will inform you when updates become available.

ok, so the thing is, i want a more up to date version of wine, it's saying it's already fully updated at version 1.1.23...i check their site and their at least at 1.1.3. and i tried following those instructions in the link but it doesn't seem to have worked...maybe i just downloaded the package wrong...

If it's the latest package in the installer, than it's the latest package you will get via package manager. Going around the package manager is not recommended nor supported.

Wait for package to be updated in the repository, you may have to add the limbo repository even, which includes newer versions for testing.

Take a look at portage for the package and use emerge, but only do this in a limiting manner.
