How to manage installed packages? [Solved]

Postby xaber » Thu Sep 24, 2009 19:48

Hi there! I would really like to know if there's a way to manage sabayon packages after installation, i.e. if there is any tool as the debian dpkg... I read that gentoo has qpkg: is this used also for sabayon? And if yes, how to use it? I have gentoolkit installed in sabayon, but when I try, for example, "qpkg -I", the installed packages are not listed and the qpkg man is very short and doesn't have many useful hints...
Can anyone help me?
Thanks in advance!

Yes, there is.

It is equo(TUI)/sulfur(GUI), you can also use the traditional Gentoo emerge.
They are largely documented in the wiki, you should check it.

No, I am talking about something differeE.g., in Debian apt-get is used for installing and removing packages, while dpkg is used only for managing the already installed packages. For example, dpkg --get-selecttions makes me see the pkgs installed on my HD.
Same for sabayon: equo and emerge install and remove packages, but is there anything which can handle installed pkgs and make me see all the installed packages I have?

Yes, it is equo that does it:
Code: Select all
equo query installed

list the installed packages,
Code: Select all
equo query depends <package>

resolve inverse dependencies on "package", and so on.

Read the documentation, you will find a lot of interesting things :D

[EDIT] About emerge, check:
Code: Select all
man equery

To list all packages do:
Code: Select all
equery -q list -i '*/*'

or
Code: Select all
equery list -i '*/*'

if you want the complete version.
qpkg is deprecated.

Sorry for re opening this thread.
I wanted to link all the installed packages to a text file so I can read it up later on. But it just wrote a bunch of unreadable text.

Code: Select all
equo query installed >> Desktop/installedList

Is there some other way to have a nicer output to text?

Thanks in advance,

The bad characters are probably due to the coloured text that makes it easier to read
the output on a console.
Try:
Code: Select all
equo query --nocolor installed >> Desktop/installedList

You could also want a more concise output, you can obtain it
with:
Code: Select all
equo query --nocolor --quiet installed >> Desktop/installedList

notice that the "nocolor" option could be removed from the quiet command,
as it will not produce a coloured output, but I leave it there just for completeness.
