Getting java to work on 64bit sabayon and Firefox 3.5

Postby bowhuntr » Mon Aug 03, 2009 0:27

I don't know if this is the right place for this, if feel free to move it.

I have tried eselect to set the java-vm and it seems to work but firefox still doesn't find the plugin. If you guys can help I would appreciate the help.

Thanks

no problems here. can you give a site that is not working for you? did you try reinstalling via entropy?
If you check the wiki, use the search function and google you can find the answer to most of your questions.

I confirm the problem: the same happens to me. Console output:

Actualy the thing is even after doing eselect and choosing the right java-vm, ie. sun-jre, it didn't show up in his firefox addons->plugins and his java tests are not working. No idea what's the cause.

Code: Select all
[email protected] ~ $ eselect java-vm list
Available Java Virtual Machines:
  [1]   blackdown-jdk-1.4.2
  [2]   emul-linux-x86-java-1.6
  [3]   icedtea-6
  [4]   icedtea6-bin
  [5]   sun-jdk-1.6  system-vm user-vm
[email protected] ~ $ java-config -L
The following VMs are available for generation-2:
1)   Blackdown JDK 1.4.2.03 [blackdown-jdk-1.4.2]
2)   IcedTea6-bin 1.4.1 [icedtea6-bin]
*)   Sun JDK 1.6.0.14 [sun-jdk-1.6]

But in about:plugins I see:
Code: Select all
IcedTea Java Web Browser Plugin

    File name: IcedTeaPlugin.so
The IcedTea Java Web Browser Plugin 1.4.1 (Gentoo-icedtea6-bin-1.4.1) executes Java applets.

Is there any other thing to configure?

You need to use eselect java-nsplugin not java vm

I've got the same issue, but I'm not really sure what I'm doing. I've never used eselect before.

As with others in this thread, my java plugin does not get listed in 'about:plugins' and the test site listed above doesn't work. I have 64-bit Sabayon, but I'm not sure if firefox is 64- or 32-bits. I seem to remember though that when I upgraded to ff3.5 somewhere I saw the only option was 32-bit. How can I check that?

This is the output of eselect list:
Code: Select all
[email protected] ~ $ eselect java-nsplugin list
Available 32-bit Java browser plugins
Available 64-bit Java browser plugins
  [1]   icedtea6-bin
  [2]   sun-jdk-1.6  current

Is this saying that there's no 32-bit version? Could that be why it's not working?

I'm also trying to get pdf's embedded in firefox. In the past I always did it using mozplugger, but I can't seem to get that plugin to show up either.
