I found a temporary solution to the problem.

It's strange, but after I kdesu kate, I can open dolphin again in super user mode again. However, the problem with dolphin returns after I reboot or ctrl+alt+backspace.

Not to bring this off-topic or anything but I have to disagree with this statement.

sudo is completely independant of distro or window manager. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sudo It is mostly used for multiple user administration purposes to allow different levels of privileges. So, on a single user system it is mostly unnecessary. However, I find it usefull if I want to run just one command as root, there would be fewer keystokes involved. It also keeps me in good habits for security reasons.

kdesu and gksu are GUI frontends (for kde and gnome respectively) to su designed to provide root access for just one specific command, whereas su can be used to provide general root access for subsequent use by any number of commands.

I use sudo only because root doesn't find many commands.

For example:
$su
#*password*
#dolphin
#bash: dolphin: command not found

Therefore, I'm forced to:
#sudo dolphin

I use sudo while I'm in root mode to run the commands that root won't find on its own. The advantage of sudo over kdesu is that if I want to end the process, I can select the terminal and press ctrl+c.

I know I'm going a bit off topic, but is there a setting to make root aware of all the commands so that I don't have to use sudo?

Out of curiosity, do you have semantic desktop enabled?
Can you try disable Nepomuk and strigi?

Yes I do have it enabled.
I just disabled it, and reseted the computer to see if this was the problem. However, the problem still remains.

The only remedy that I have at the moment is opening kate in superuser at least once every time I reboot the computer.

i'd try to remove
Code: Select all
 rm -rf /root/.kde4.2/

If root now again would use kde, it will regenerate this folder out of skel. Lets see if that fixes it maybe.

Hi dsparil

I have the same problem as you. If I do a kdesu dolphin, I get the error message "Could not start process cannot talk to klauncher: The name org.kde.klauncher was not provided by any .service files".

I've had this problem in kde 4.2.2 though; ever since I done a fresh install of SabayonLinux 4.1 kde.

Hope you find a solution, might be a kde bug or some kind of permissions problem?

All the best

Dave

Edit: just Googled problem and got straight to answer.
Here is kde bug link https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=165268
Here is temp solution: try typing in kdesu dbus-launch dolphin

Cheers :) Great thing Google :wink:

I tried this:

$su
*password*
#rm -rf /root/.kde4.2/

I opened a new terminal
$kdesu dolphin
I got the same error.

Nepomuk and strigi are also disabled.

I think that the default KDE configuration that is being produced is what is causing this bug.
I'm not an expert, but the problem might lie in the default settings found in: /root/.kde4.2/share/config/dolphinrc

Here is what is in it:

Code: Select all
[General]
FirstRun=false
ViewPropsTimestamp=2009,5,11,10,10,37

[MainWindow]
Height 800=500
State=AAAA/wAAAAD9AAAAAwAAAAAAAABhAAABrvwCAAAAAvsAAAAYAHQAcgBlAGUAVgBpAGUAdwBEAG8AYwBrAAAAAAD/////AAAAGQEAAAL7AAAAFABwAGwAYQBjAGUAcwBEAG8AYwBrAQAAAEYAAAGuAAAATwEAAAIAAAABAAAArgAAAa78AgAAAAH7AAAAEABpAG4AZgBvAEQAbwBjAGsBAAAARgAAAa4AAADzAQAAAgAAAAP///////////wBAAAAAfsAAAAYAHQAZQByAG0AaQBuAGEAbABEAG8AYwBrAAAAAAD/////AAAATQEAAAUAAAHZAAABrgAAAAQAAAAEAAAACAAAAAj8AAAAAQAAAAIAAAABAAAAFgBtAGEAaQBuAFQAbwBvAGwAQgBhAHIBAAAAAP////8AAAAAAAAAAA==
Width 1280=750

It could be another config file since konqueror is giving me the same issues, but I wouldn't know where to look.

How about this?

I wonder why not everybody suffers from this bug...
