Hello,

Is there a plan to add/upgrade to wine 4?

Thanks.

Hello msdobrescu,

wine-staging 4.0 is out of question for now as it requires "unstable" ffmpeg-4.

What do you mean by '"unstable" ffmpeg-4'?

ffmpeg 3.4.5 is in portage stable branch.
ffmpeg 4.1.1 is in portage unstable branch.

While Sabayon is generally built out of the unstable portage branch, there are a lot of applications that depend on ffmpeg to work. Basically, it would be risky to upgrade. How much risk? I don't know. But that's the general idea of what was stated in that bug.

Thanks, but what means stable/unstable in this case?
Simply versioning? Crashes a lot? A known bunch of serious bugs ready to hit?

Well, there are many unstable packages from Gentoo point of view, including current wine 3.21 version.
Another question: doens't Sabayon have a preserved libraries mechanism? Why not having several library versions at the same time? It seems that wine different versions can be installed at the same time now.
Why not having ffmpeg 4 installed only for wine 4 until things get more stable and clear? Or why not link ffmpeg statically to wine 4?
How long do we have to wait for stabilization of ffmpeg 4 in order to have wine 4?

Unstable = testing.

Having multiple versions installed side by side is much more complicated for maintainers than you seem to believe. It is possible, but it is not something to do without careful consideration of the costs/benefits.

As far the rest of your questions, you'd have to ask an actual maintainer. I'm just trying to provide what context I can as a user that's been around for a good long while.

Well, I am a software developer myself, so I imagine.
I did not say it's easy, but I have just noticed there are ways already implemented.
Wine 4 is an important development and, despite I don't play Windows games, I don't play much games at all on PC, I hope I can run other Windows software.
And, yes, I love Sabayon for its stability and I understand distribution's policy to test thoroughly the software first!

Hi, six months passed after Wine 4 was adopted on other distros. Is there a plan to have it on Sabayon?
I mean a time schedule, not necessarily a release soon.

Unfortunately ffmpeg still does not seem to be stable, but you can use lutris to use wine 4.x.
