midnight commander: memory access error [partly Solved]

Post by linuxfluesterer » Thu May 03, 2018 19:09

Hallo guys (repo maintainers).
I just upgraded my Sabayon 18.04 Plasma version as date of 02/05/2018. Plasma seems to work, upgraded modules also.
But when I start the midnight commander (mc) I receive an error:

Code: Select all

memory access error, crash dump saved
And, I checked, mc was not upgraded, it's still the same version 4.8.20-r1.

So, it must be something else for reason. I don't know, if other programs or parts are effected by this phenomenon.

Anybody here, who can confirm this message? How can I solve this problem? I need mc.

I can confirm. Recompiled mc, it is in testing repo now.

Just update my sabayon.repo. No upgrade to be installed, 04/05/2018,10.57 UTC. But however, I reinstalled mc. But the problem is not solved anyway. Same attitude.

Before I posted, there was NO upgrade for mc in big upgrade. So I wonder, how a recompile should solve this memory access problem. I assume, the origin is somewhere else, something like memory management of Linux itself. Am I right?

Hi...
I have installed "mc-4.8.20-r2" from Gentoo and "plasma-18.04" from Sabayon.... No issues...
This problem is related to the incompatibility between old version "mc" and newer system.

Update:
of course "plasma-5.45.0"...

So, when is in Sabayon repo, the problem is fixed then?
How can I check, which plasma I have? When I enter:

Code: Select all

plasmashel -v
then I receive

Code: Select all

plasmashell 5.12.4

Sorry, I mechanically wrote out bad plasma number (repeated after your Sabayon version)... Should be of course "plasma-5.45.0", the newest in Sabayon and Gentoo...

Update: A friend just told me to check mc to work with mouse clicks, which I did now. And he is right, it is not possible to control mc with mouse.

So, mc is opened, ready to use, it is possible to use it with keys, but when using a mouse (e.g. to change a directory or activate a function), there is no reaction but in the lower line under the mc window, there are appearing control codes.

Any idea?
