Failed to find module 'zfs'

Post by Douglas_E_Knapp » Mon Dec 22, 2014 7:51

I just re-installed sabayon kde and am getting this boot error. I don't think I am even using zfs but could be standard. How do I fix this problem?

Thanks!

seems to be normal behavior, if you dont use ZFS as main file system.

Code: Select all

$ sudo /usr/lib64/systemd/systemd-modules-load
Password:
Failed to find module 'zfs'
$
If that tells you that the zfs module failed to load, and if you are not using ZFS as your file system, check if the package is installed:

Code: Select all

$ equo search sys-fs/zfs
If it is, uninstall it:

Code: Select all

$ sudo equo remove zfs
which will fix the problem once you reboot:

Code: Select all

$ sudo /usr/lib64/systemd/systemd-modules-load
Password:
$

That can't be good! It removes grub! So I, "equo i grup" and it installs both grub and zfs back. It seems that they are linked.
Thanks.

Removal of the grub package did not matter in my case: the installation still boots as usual, and the contents of /boot/grub remain. You can see all this below:

Code: Select all

$ # You can see that sys-fs/zfs is no longer installed:
$ equo search --installed zfs
╠  @@ Searching...
╠   Keywords:  zfs
╠   Found:     0 entries
$
$ # You can see that sys-boot/grub is no longer installed:
$ equo search --installed sys-boot/grub
╠  @@ Searching...
╠   Keywords:  sys-boot/grub
╠   Found:     0 entries
$
$ # You can see that the error message "Failed to find module zfs" is no longer produced:
$ sudo /usr/lib64/systemd/systemd-modules-load
Password:
$
$ # You can see that the grub files in /boot/grub are still all there:
$ ls /boot/grub/
default             fat_stage1_5   grub.conf.old.add     iso9660_stage1_5   stage1           ufs2_stage1_5
default-splash.png  ffs_stage1_5   grub.conf.old.remove  jfs_stage1_5       stage2           unifont.pf2
dejavu.pf2          fonts          grub.conf.remove      locale             stage2_eltorito  vstafs_stage1_5
device.map          grub.cfg       grubenv               minix_stage1_5     stage2.old       xfs_stage1_5
e2fs_stage1_5       grub.conf.add  i386-pc               reiserfs_stage1_5  themes
$
If you want to run grub2-install to re-install grub itself to /boot and to the MBR (or to the boot sector of a partition), as opposed to installing sys-boot/grub the package, or if you want to run grub2-mkconfig to regenerate /boot/grub/grub.cfg, then you would need to re-install the package sys-boot/grub.

Or you can put up with the error message at boot! It's up to you.

OK, if you're worried about uninstalling zfs and grub, go ahead and re-install them but then do the following as root user:

Code: Select all

# rm /usr/lib/modules-load.d/zfs.conf
See http://www.freedesktop.org/software/sys ... oad.d.html

Code: Select all

# ls /etc/modules-load.d/
#
# ls /run/modules-load.d/
ls: cannot access /run/modules-load.d: No such file or directory
#
# ls /run/modules-load.d/
ls: cannot access /run/modules-load.d/: No such file or directory
#

Code: Select all

# equo install zfs

Hey guys,

This is normal to have these messages. That's the method that grub use to find out what filesystem is on a disk. It just try to read it with ext2, btrfs, zfs, ... So don't worry about these messages.

Regards,
Bernard :mrgreen:
