Skype fails to login [Solved]

Postby aquarius » Mon Jul 15, 2013 9:30

Hi,
after one of recent updates (probably on July 7, weekly repo) my skype fails to login. The progress wheel rotates indefinitely.

If I start if from command line it shows following output:
Code: Select all
$ skype
Fontconfig error: "/etc/fonts/conf.d/10-scale-bitmap-fonts.conf", line 70: non-double matrix element
Fontconfig error: "/etc/fonts/conf.d/10-scale-bitmap-fonts.conf", line 70: non-double matrix element
Fontconfig warning: "/etc/fonts/conf.d/10-scale-bitmap-fonts.conf", line 78: saw unknown, expected number

I assume problems with fornt should bot prevent skype from logging me in. Or might they?

What I've tried:
a) disabled firewall
b) deleted .Skype/shared.xml
c) deleted .Skype
Nothing of the above helped.
At the same time Skype works fine on the same machine if I boot into Arch.

Any suggestions how can I "resurrect" skype? :D

I'm using x64 SL with E17. Probably that does not matter so: my Arch is also x64 and also rung E17.

Thanks in advance!

Looks like you might have the same problem as user ezioze in the thread Skype connect only if root.

Well, I'm not sure my suggestions in that thread will be of help to you, as I don't think we have got to the root of the problem (if you'll pardon the double entendre). You're right in thinking that the font error messages aren't the cause of the problem, as I get those messages too and they don't stop me using Skype in Gentoo and in SL Xfce. I wonder if this is due to some configuration file or rule file. Also, are you using OpenRC or systemd?

I still appriciate your help.

I believe I'm on OpenRC - I did not touched init settings. Here is my eselect output:
Code: Select all
# eselect sysvinit list
Available init implementations:
  [1]   systemd
  [2]   sysvinit *

I had this issue as well. After downgrading my skype version all the back to 2.2 I found that the root cause was Pulse Audio. More specifically, pulse audio 4.
Doing some google-fu I was able to find that adding load-module module-equalizer-sink to the end of my default.pa file would allow skype to connect. My assumption is that it didn't hang at connect before, it actually hangs at initializing sound devices which is all done during the same step with the same start animation.
Even after this, all I got from skype was a loud buzz that wouldn't stop until I forcefully exited the program. Through G+ I found this can be solved by launching skype through the command line with PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=30 skype &
If you need the extra 30 msec and don't want to use command line you can edit the file /usr/share/applications/skype-skype.desktop as root and change whatever it has for Exec to Exec=/usr/bin/env PULSE_LATENCY_MSEC=30 /usr/bin/skype %U

Hope this helps and saves some time.

Wow! That works!
Thank you mc_crafty so much!
You definitely saved me a lot of time.

P.S. Marking as solved.

P.P.S. :!: Warning :!: This solution caused audio problems for VirtualBox guests.

mc_crafty's first post... it's nice to see a Good Samaritan coming to the rescue! Good to know you have Skype working again, aquarius.

As far as PulseAudio is concerned...
