Emailing large attachments....how do I compress? [Solved]

Postby greendave8 » Sun Mar 31, 2013 21:54

Hi All,
Dumb question this may be, but I am stumped at how to do this...
I want to send some pics (jpegs) to a competition. There are 7 pics, which come to just over 30Mb and so too big to e-mail. So, I try to compress them, and the compressed file (rar) is only very slightly smaller.... not even 1Mb smaller than the original...
So, unless I send several emails, it looks like I am unable to do this simple task...So, what am I missing here folks??

Thanks in advance

There is also a command to do this. :D
It does so with the split command:
Code: Select all
$ split-b 1024m filename prefix
file_name divides into several parts of a fixed size, in this case of 1024 Mb (replace the suffix m with k if you want to specify the size in Kb) by naming them in PREFIXaa, PREFIXab, ... where the default prefix is 'x'.
To reconstruct the file, use the command:
Code: Select all
$ cat prefix* > filename

jpg files never compress well because they are already compressed image files. That export to email command in Gwenview will probably just resize the images or reduce the quality or both.
