Firefox vs. Chromium (Java?) Script Issues

Postby tonyawards » Sat Mar 23, 2013 23:28

I am trying to get some websites that seem to require Java for functions and logins, to run properly inside Firefox, and am at a loss as to what needs doing. I have had no luck in Mozilla's help, nor iced-tea's, nor Oracle's. Equo tells me I have dev-java/oracle-jre-bin-1.7.0.9 installed, and inside the javatester.com (http://www.javatester.org/version.html) website, it detects “Java Version 1.6.0_27 from Sun Microsystems” as installed, using their detection tool in both Firefox and Chromium.

These may or may not even relate, Java is still a puzzle to me after all these years...

But – does anyone know why Chromium will let me perform certain functions inside my banking website, and will run the “netvibes.com” RSS login page (damn you, Google), etc., with no problems, while Firefox will not? At least not after the last couple of updates, anyway, before about v.17-18 it was fine. I've looked elsewhere for a while now with no luck, and am hoping someone in our community has some experience with this one.

I currently have this:

Code: Select all
# eselect java-vm list
Available Java Virtual Machines:
grep: /usr/share/java-config-2/vm/emul-linux-x86-java-1.6: No such file or directory
grep: /usr/share/java-config-2/vm/icedtea-6: No such file or directory
grep: /usr/share/java-config-2/vm/sun-jdk-1.6: No such file or directory
  [1]   emul-linux-x86-java-1.6
  [2]   icedtea-6
  [3]   icedtea-bin-6  system-vm
  [4]   oracle-jre-bin-1.7
  [5]   sun-jdk-1.6

Maybe they are not properly selected to play together, I'm not sure, do all versions need to agree?
Maybe it's not even a Java issue, I can't figure it out...

I do use No-Script in FF, but I have given permissions to the sites in question, and in any case the settings have not changed in quite a while, and the sites did function normally in the past with No-Script. Just in case, I disabled it for a test, but there was no difference.

Everything else in my system is equo-ed and up to date, and I'm using FF v.19, 3.8.3 kernel.

Thank you, all.

see
Code: Select all
$ java-config

for all options

set user's VM

List of VMs
Code: Select all
$ java-config -L
The following VMs are available for generation-2:
1)      IcedTea JDK 7.2.3.8 [icedtea-7]
2)      IcedTea JDK 6.1.12.2 [icedtea-bin-6]

set user VM (example ...)
Code: Select all
$ java-config -s 1
The following VMs are available for generation-2:
*)      IcedTea JDK 7.2.3.8 [icedtea-7]

Thanks for the quick reply, sabayonino – I'm not quite sure what to do, though. So I tried installing a newer icedtea, and as that hasn't worked, thought I'd better post what I did do before I get in deeper here...

So, with some edits and condensing for space saving, I have done:
Code: Select all
dev-java/icedtea-7.2.3.8
These are the packages that would be installed:
>>  ## [N] [sabayonlinux.org] dev-java/icedtea-7.2.3.8|1
>>  ## [N] [sabayonlinux.org] dev-java/icedtea-web-1.3.1-r7|0
edit --
 ## Package phase: postinstall
 * System nsplugin is already set, not changing it.
 * You can change nsplugin with eselect java-nsplugin.
 * The icedtea browser plugin (NPPlugin) can be enabled using eselect java-nsplugin

Undoubtedly this is wrong and I've probably made things even more complicated, but I'm not sure what to do next. I have restarted Firefox and checked to see what version of icedtea it is using (1.3.1) but nothing further so far. Sorry for any obvious errors or misinterpretations, but I'm really not sure about Java's setup requirements.

I have tried to use Logmein (which uses java in Linux) in Firefox and it always locks Firefox up. In Chromium it works fine. So it would seem to be a Firefox issue and I have tried icedtea and Sun JRE.

Hi sabayonino, and thanks for the command. I ran it and it pulled in:

Code: Select all
# equo i app-emulation/emul-linux-x86-java dev-java/icedtea:6 dev-java/icedtea-bin:7

>>  @@ Packages needing to be installed/updated/downgraded: 4

After installing them, I checked the settings, and currently this is where I am set as user:

Code: Select all
[email protected] ~ $ eselect java-vm list
Available Java Virtual Machines:
grep: /usr/share/java-config-2/vm/sun-jdk-1.6: No such file or directory

  [5]   icedtea-bin-7
  [6]   oracle-jre-bin-1.7
  [7]   sun-jdk-1.6

[email protected] ~ $ java-config -L
The following VMs are available for generation-2:
1)      Sun 32bit JRE 1.6.0.37 [emul-linux-x86-java-1.6]
2)      IcedTea JDK 6.1.12.4 [icedtea-6]
*)      IcedTea JDK 7.2.3.8 [icedtea-7]
4)      IcedTea JDK 6.1.12.2 [icedtea-bin-6]
5)      IcedTea JDK 7.2.3.6 [icedtea-bin-7]
6)      Oracle JRE 1.7.0.9 [oracle-jre-bin-1.7]
[email protected] ~ $

I still am not getting Firefox to function fully in those sites – what settings are still wrong? Do the user and system vm have to agree, or is it something else?

Thank you.

I have been looking around and found additional info on the Gentoo Java page (http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/java.xml) but am not quite sure what to do with the info for Firefox. I ran a command posted there for more data:

Code: Select all
# eselect java-nsplugin list
Available 32-bit Java browser plugins
  [1]   emul-linux-x86-java-1.6  current
Available 64-bit Java browser plugins
  [1]   icedtea-6
  [2]   icedtea-7
  [3]   icedtea-bin-6  current
  [4]   icedtea-bin-7
  [5]   oracle-jre-bin-1.7

I do have an AMD64 system, and assume I am using a 64-bit Firefox. It has no Java plugin listed in add-ons, just the 1.3.1 iced-tea. Hope this info helps.
