OpenOffice.org mssing

Post by Ryuno-Ki » Fri Jan 25, 2013 18:07

Yeah, I know, there's LibreOffice.
But because I want to join a meeting today (and therefore take my wife's notebook) I need to offer her an alternative. She's working on an important document at the moment using MS Word (no comments, please). And due to formatting/display errors with LibreOffice she wants to use OpenOffice.
No problem I thought. But openoffice-bin isn't in entropy. I'm emerging the portage package right now.

This thread is a reminder to myself in the second instance. I fill a package request later.

^It's not exactly the same. After the fork things diverged somewhat.

Ryuno-Ki, the binary of OpenOffice 3.4.1 is in Portage if that version is of use, so you could merge it. If you have not set up your SL installation to use Portage before:

Code: Select all

$ su
Password:
# equo install git
# equo install subversion
# emerge --sync
# layman -S
# layman -d sabayon
# layman -d sabayon-distro
# layman -a sabayon
# layman -a sabayon-distro
# layman -S
# emerge -1v openoffice-bin
# equo rescue spmsync
# exit
exit
$
(Some of the above commands are, strictly speaking, not necessary. I include them because hopefully they should cover every eventuality.)

I find that Open Office does handle word .doc files much better than Libre.

No it isn't. Since the time, Apache take over openoffice things changed. LibreOffice is more recent in development, but deforms .doc files somehow. However, I filled a package request yesterday.

Thanks for reply. Due to my less time yesterday, I just run:

Code: Select all

$su
# emerge --sync
# emerge portage # as it was recommended on the output
# emerge openoffice-bin
# exit

Wherefore are the layman commands? git is already installed. It's no problem for me to unemerge merged packages and reinstalled the right way …

Edit: Package request sentence inserted.

There are two basic rules when mixing Entropy and Portage:
  • never edit /etc/make.conf
  • never use Portage to update Portage
If you break them, you are about to break your system.
Sabayon Wiki wrote:…Sabayon uses a version of Portage that is hard masked in Portage. This means that you will actually be DOWNGRADING, not upgrading portage. This one simple mistake can completely break your installation due to differing dependencies at the system level. If you are going to mix and match, ALWAYS use Entropy to upgrade portage.

Got it. I've unemerged the two packages (openoffice and pip) from (the day before) yesterday and now looking, how I can unemerge portage to update it through entropy.

Code: Select all

# emerge -pv  --depclean portage

Calculating dependencies... done!
  sys-apps/portage-2.2.0_alpha161 pulled in by:
    app-admin/packagekit-base-0.7.5 requires >=sys-apps/portage-2.1.9
    app-admin/python-updater-0.10-r2 requires >=sys-apps/portage-2.1.6
    app-portage/gentoolkit-0.3.0.7 requires sys-apps/portage
    app-portage/pfl-2.3-r1 requires sys-apps/portage
    dev-java/bsf-2.4.0-r1 requires >=sys-apps/portage-2.1.2.7
    dev-java/commons-lang-2.6 requires >=sys-apps/portage-2.1.2.7
    dev-java/commons-logging-1.1.1 requires >=sys-apps/portage-2.1.2.7
    dev-java/msv-20050627-r3 requires >=sys-apps/portage-2.1.2.7
    dev-java/xalan-2.7.1 requires >=sys-apps/portage-2.1.2.7
    dev-java/xpp2-2.1.10-r1 requires >=sys-apps/portage-2.1.2.7
    sys-apps/entropy-172 requires >=sys-apps/portage-2.1.9

>>> No packages selected for removal by depclean
Packages installed:   1845
Packages in world:    804
Packages in system:   42
Required packages:    1845
Number to remove:     0
Don't looks pretty :-/

Thanks for the hint.

@Fitzcarraldo: I've read The Complete Portage Guide concerning Emerge now. Thanks for your code snippet.
