KDE 4.6.5 is good.
Please provide more info, like: running architecture, /var/log/Xorg.0.log, dmesg output, ~/.xsession-errors, etc etc etc.

...this is probably because Sabayon is "experimental" [expletive deleted]
...now on to your problem. I have the exact same problem, and what I found is that during the update sabayon deletes your KDE entirely, what you need to do is update your sabayon, and then DO NOT TURN OFF THE SYSTEM. there will be a second and maybe even a third subsequent round of updates you need in order for sabayon to REinstall your KDE.

SO IN SHORT UPDATE once; then UPDATE AGAIN; then CHECK FOR EVEN MORE UPDATES; BEFORE YOU EVEN THINK ABOUT TURNING OFF OR LOGGING OUT OF YOUR SYSTEM/KDE SESSION!!!!

I have no problems with latest updates, and it seems everybody else doesn't too. Maybe it's something related to your system, but without logs / more info, we cannot help.

Hi lxnay,

"KDE 4.6.5 is good.
Please provide more info, like: running architecture, /var/log/Xorg.0.log, dmesg output, ~/.xsession-errors, etc etc etc"

My system is: intel i7 2600k cpu, Nvidia 450gts card. Asus P67 pro m/board with 4Gb RAm. 64 bit Sabayon installed.

Everything has been fine under KDE, but yesterday I updated 166 items thru sulfur. When I rebooted, I logged in with password, it took a minute or so... as the "desktop" was coming up, it all went to a dark screen with a mouse pointer (which is still movable by the mouse). No wallpaper, no icons no start bar, nothing. As described earlier, I could get into XMBC and it all looked fine as did Fluxbox.

I then downloaded the Gnome desktop, which also logs in just fine... I am in Gnome as I write this. THerefore I think the nvidia stuff is fine...

Hope you can shed some light on this, as I really like KDE and prefer it to gnome

Thanks

Re: Todays updates Broke my System!??!?

well it seems something in kde did not update as expected. I have used kde for years, sometimes this happens.
I only had 1 minor issue with a missing lib, deptest fixed.
Only thing I can suggest, as user not root
Code: Select all
mv ~/.kde4 ~/.kde4.old

this will move your home folder, when you log in a new one will be created, if this does not work

Code: Select all
equo install kde-meta

iirc sabayon does not ship with full meta packages, you will get extras installed, kturtle typing game etc...
I already have meta installed, if I run the above command, will only install 1 package kde-base.
I have ran the command on a broken kde, both gentoo and sabayon, and has installed 100+ packages and kde was repaired.

Some prefer not to have the extra meta packages installed, sometimes is the easy button to repair kde.

MMmmmmm..... no directory found when I tried the mv command....

I am really stumped here..... Gnome is fine, but not a favourite for me, I have tried re-installing kde, but it makes no difference..... Something is wrong somewhere.... I am getting fed up now, .... aaaaarrrrggghhhh!

Thanks for the help and suggestions.... looks like I might try xfce for a while, until I get a solution, or start again....

Thanks again for trying

I apologize, I just edited the above mv command, I left out 4 my bad
I just remembered it and came back to edit the post, see you beat me to it.
The command as I wrote it would say file not found.

On a side note, I am currently on gentoo system, installed 4.6.5 several days ago, no errors.
I just updated, and portage had a new kde-base, kdm, several other kde updates, I suspect others were having problems also.
Maybe those updates will be in entropy soon and help.

Hi Genfool,

You know.... your keeping me from re-installing the lot.... which is a good thing. Feels like there is help out there...I think others have had issues too, with the latest updates, but curiously no one is saying the answers.... not that I can find anyhow...! I'll just be patient.... am on gnome at present....

cheers
