Minimizing Firefox and Thunderbird: missing [Solved]

Postby harmon » Sat Jul 02, 2011 10:37

Hi!
Two similar problems:
I open Firefox or Thunderbird and minimize it, but I can't get them back.
I've added to the panel: Firefox, Thunderbird, Logout, Virtual keyboard, KSnapshot, Sytem Monitor and Konsole.
Any idea?

Once in a blue moon this happens to me with Firefox. When I right-click on the minimised application on the Panel I find that both Minimise and Maximise are ticked. I untick one of them (or both, I can't recall now) and try again.

Hi!
The problem is: I don't see a minimized Firefox or Thunderbird.
And I have the same problem, if I add the Icons to the Desktop, delete the Icons in the panel and minimize after having started from Desktop KDE.
BTW: openSuse and PCLinuxOS (both KDE): no problem.

Ah, now I understand what you meant. I thought you meant that, when you minimised them, they remained minimised on the Panel and you could not maximise them again.

If they are disappearing completely when you minimise them (i.e. they don't appear minimised on the Panel) then I have no idea, as that has never happened to me on either of the two machines with SL and KDE that I am using.

Is the version of SL KDE that you are you using 5.5 upgraded to current via Entropy, or did you install from the SL 6 LiveDVD and upgrade to current via Entropy?

Which version of Firefox and Thunderbird does this happen with? Just the latest version, or with a previous version too?

Just a thought: what happens if you use Alt+Tab? Can you find and re-open them using that? It's not the solution to the problem, but could be a work-around until someone can find out what is causing it.

Hi!
1. After having formatted the root partition with PartedMagic 6.2/ GParted I installed SL 6 KDE 64 from DVD,
"/home" - as own partition - only mounted.
The problems appeared with the new version of SL.
2. Thunderbird 3.1.10, Firefox 4.0.1.
(BTW: No problem with Opera)
3. ALT + TAB -> I could restore the last 3 minimized Firefox sessions (one after another).

Edit:
The same problems after updating to Thb 3.1.11 and Ff 5.0 (<- Launch Package Manager).

If you don't have a problem with Opera (and presumably any other minimised window) then that tells me that you have not inadvertently removed the Task Manager widget from the Panel. However, you could try removing it and re-adding it to the Panel to see if that has an effect. To do that, click on the 'cashew' in the top right corner of your screen and select Unlock Widgets. Then click on the 'cashew' on the right of the Panel, to open the Panel Tool Box. Then select and delete the Task Manager widget from the Panel, and drag a new instance of the widget to the Panel again. Then close the Panel Tool Box and lock you widgets again. Give that a go.

Hi Fitzcarraldo!
Problem solved (Task Manager!) - thank you very much.
But I must say I've installed more than 10 Linux distributions and never had a similar problem.
And strange (for me) that Opera, Skype,... did not cause that problem.

Glad to read you got it working. I've never had the problem myself but perhaps it was due to those two applications using GTK instead of Qt. Just a guess.
