I saw the XBMC team finally released 10.0 yesterday, has anyone played around with it yet?

There's an ebuild in the Sabayon overlay, so you'll have a built package in the Entropy repository shortly, I imagine. I installed it via Portage and visually/functionally it doesn't look much different from the previous version, although I haven't played with it much. Actually I'm still trying to work out where the volume control is! One thing that is immediately noticeably worse than the previous version on my laptop is that the text scrolling across the bottom of the screen doesn't scroll smoothly like it did in the previous version; it sort of 'snags' (stops and starts). Don't know what's going on there. Music plays fine (although I can't find the volume control, only the Stop/Pause etc. buttons); I can view pictures fine, but cannot play videos. So Version 10.0 is a backwards step in my case.

EDIT (Tue Dec 28 11:35:08 GMT 2010): Here's the error message in ~/.xbmc/temp/xbmc.log:

Please please, give us XBMC 10... I'm waiting for it a long time...

I downgraded from xbmc-10.0 to xbmc-9.11-r5 and video works fine again.

I have just now built XBMC 10.0 using the ebuild from the main tree instead of the ebuild from the Sabayon overlay, and video works in XBMC 10.0. lxnay has created a 10.0-r1 ebuild in the overlay, so perhaps that works too.

Are you talking about the Entropy package xbmc-10.0-r1? Are you saying that that does not work for you?

If you have not tried the 10.0-r1 version in the Entropy repository, try that first:

Code: Select all

# equo update
# equo upgrade <--- This will install the latest version of the XBMC and portage packages from the Entropy repository.
# equo conf update
If XBMC 10.0-r1 from the Entropy repository (which was built using the xbmc-10.0-r1 ebuild from the Sabayon Portage overlay) does not work for you, you could try building XBMC 10.0 by using the 10.0 ebuild in the main Portage tree, which works for me:

Code: Select all

$ su
Password: <--- Enter root user's password.
# emerge --sync <--- Do NOT emerge the portage package if Portage tells you to, because you're an Entropy user.
# layman -S
# emerge -1v =media-tv/xbmc-10.0::gentoo
# equo rescue spmsync
Incidentally, the penultimate command above does not work for me because I'm not using portage-2.2.* (I'm using portage-2.1.9.26 from the main Portage tree). Neither are Entropy users, but I notice that 11 days ago lxnay forked the portage ebuild (portage-2.1.9.25.ebuild) to use some of the portage-2.2.* features. Anyway, if, for whatever reason, you have a problem with the penultimate command listed above, you could instead do the following to move the Sabayon overlay's version of the xbmc-10.0 ebuild, thus leaving just the main Portage ebuild version of xbmc-10.0:

Code: Select all

# mv /var/lib/layman/sabayon/media-tv/xbmc/xbmc-10.0.ebuild
/var/lib/layman/sabayon/media-tv/xbmc/xbmc-10.0.ebuild.bak
# emerge -1v =xbmc-10.0
# equo rescue spmsync
