Not sure how this happened. I believe i was trying to correct and error about my user not being in the portage group by entering:

Code: Select all

[email protected] ~ $ useradd -g portage metacym

Code: Select all

[email protected] ~ $ id
uid=1000(metacym) gid=0(root) groups=0(root),6(disk),10(wheel),11(floppy),14(uucp),16,18(audio),19(cdrom),20(dialout),27(video),35,80(cdrw),85(usb),100(users),250,409,410,411,441(scanner),442(plugdev),443(qemu),1000(entropy),1008(kvm),1009(vboxusers),1010(crontab)
[email protected] ~ $ su
Unknown id: root
[email protected] ~ $

Not sure, but you could try booting the LiveDVD, mounting the HDD partition and editing the /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow files on your HDD, or, if that does not work, try copying them from the LiveDVD directory to the HDD directory to overwrite the files you messed up.
