Tracker daemon should be disabled by default

Postby yuguang » Tue Feb 17, 2009 22:58

Anyone running gnome in LiteMCE will probably have this annoying thing that makes the hard drive click whenever a file is generated in their home directory. It's caused by the search and indexing, but can be disabled. http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/linux/what-is-trackerd-and-why-is-it-running/.
This thing is actually quite useless unless you want to use the command line to search for files. (The gui is not available in Sabayon)

Obviously, nautilus needs it, but there's a way (always a way) to disable it in the USE flag.
http://gentoo-portage.com/gnome-base/nautilus/USE#ptabs
Next time Sabayon is doing a release, compile nautilus without the tracker and beagle USE flag, so Sabayon lovers won't feel like they are using Windows.
The easy way to turn it off to see what difference it makes is through System \ Preferences \ Indexing Preferences and unchecking the "Enable indexing" option. The deskbar USE flag makes searching convenient http://gentoo-portage.com/app-misc/tracker/USE#ptabs, though.

done. bug 511

Edit: I didn't consider this as a bug since I end up tuning things on every OS I use.

Well I consider tracker to be a bug :D

And your saying that something that causes your system to be slow on a default install isnt a bug? .... That implies you WANT your system to be slow :D
