Steam games in wine [Solved]

Postby psilo357 » Mon Dec 22, 2008 4:46

So I have just finished installing wine then installing steam, both went just fine. However, whenever I attempt to launch a game it does not work and fails. I have been working on this and searching around for a few hours today and just cannot get passed this problem!!! Any help would be great. Here is the output in console whenever i attempt to launch a game

Code: Select all
err:ole:CoGetClassObject class {9a5ea990-3034-4d6f-9128-01f3c61022bc} not registered

fixme:shdocvw:OleInPlaceObject_UIDeactivate (0x10d24950)
fixme:shdocvw:OleObject_Close (0x10d24950)->(1)

i know the 'fixme' lines are normal, and i have searched and searched the errors, but not having much luck figuring out what to do, any help would be appreciated.

I am on a fresh sabayon 3.5 install as well :D

thanks for any help.

Has anyone tried steam for linux [url]ftp://ftp.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/sabayonlinux/Steam%20for%20linux/steam.gz/url] it should extract into folder and then install using
# sh ./*.run
or similar.

rebooted and killed compiz, glxgears workes fine, and opengl seems to be set up correctly, any tips on exactly what 'correctly' is?

thanks

it seems this is for a server, and not the client...also, after extracting with gunzip, it id not a folder, but just a single file called 'steam' which has no extension, so i have no clue what to do with it...

[SOLVED] Re: Steam games in wine

Alright, i finally got it figured out.

After installing the win32codecs package it works fine. I think the error still shows up, but none the less, it now works and is completely playable, with good frames to boot.

well, maybe it shouldn't, but fact is, it did. Tested right before install, games wouldn't work. Did some more googling, found someone talking about win32codecs on some other forums, installed it, did not reboot or do anythign, tested right after install, it worked.

alright, have to take this back off of solved as I am having the problems again....i can still get wine to run just fine, get my games installed, but when i launch one, i get this output:

Code: Select all
err:ole:CoGetClassObject class {9a5ea990-3034-4d6f-9128-01f3c61022bc} not registered
err:ole:CoGetClassObject no class object {9a5ea990-3034-4d6f-9128-01f3c61022bc} could be created for context 0x1
fixme:d3d:IWineD3DImpl_FillGLCaps OpenGL implementation supports 32 vertex samplers and 32 total samplers
fixme:d3d:IWineD3DImpl_FillGLCaps Expected vertex samplers + MAX_TEXTURES(=8) > combined_samplers
fixme:win:EnumDisplayDevicesW ((null),0,0x32ce7c,0x00000000), stub!
err:d3d:getColorBits Unsupported format: WINED3DFMT_A16B16G16R16F
fixme:shdocvw:ViewObject_SetAdvise (0x56e2818)->(1 00000002 0x15f8180)
fixme:shdocvw:PersistStreamInit_InitNew (0x56e2818)
fixme:shdocvw:WebBrowser_put_RegisterAsBrowser (0x56e2818)->(ffffffff)
fixme:shdocvw:WebBrowser_put_RegisterAsDropTarget (0x56e2818)->(ffffffff)

fixme:shdocvw:OleInPlaceObject_UIDeactivate (0x56e2818)
fixme:shdocvw:OleObject_Close (0x56e2818)->(1)

so the little window that says launching game comes up, it prints these errors in console, the just closes the window and the game never launches, any more help would be great, its always such a pain getting it to work, and the craziest part is, it worked fine for a while, then all of a sudden just stopped...could it be my X setup causing a problem??

Thanks for any and all help

Re: Steam games in wine [broke again]

Postby psilo357 » Sat Mar 28, 2009 20:45

Alright, did some more reading and searching, recompiled my drivers, didn't fix it...then i saw a post about using the command

Code: Select all
wineprefixcreate

then just tried again right after, and it now works again. It says its deprecated when you use the command, yet it seemed to fix my problem, at least with it playing, oddly, it still shows the same errors, in the console, but it runs just fine now, just got done playing some DoD:source...

can't wait until Steam finishes their supposed linux supported client and source engine...

anyways, solved again.
