Installing .tgz (Did read around, still have no idea how to)

Postby Flix » Tue Sep 30, 2008 6:53

First off, yeah, this will almost certainly be a very stupid and easy question; but I've spent the past several hours reading through everything I could find to no avail.

I downloaded an update to a program that isn't included yet in the overlays, in a .tgz file. For the life of me I can't figure out how to install it. I've done it several times before but..call me an idiot, I forgot how to. I totally stumbled my way through and got lucky. I read through the coding of a lot of the included files, including the readme, but they all assume that I know this most basic piece of green information.

If anyone could help me with this simple problem I'd be much obliged : )

As a general rule, if I'm installing from source, I cd to the folder that I've extracted from the tgz, then run the following commands as root:
Code: Select all
./ configure

and if everything seems OK
Code: Select all
make

and finally
Code: Select all
make install

if it's a source file then that is the way to go. If it's a binary, then find a source file.

Also - moved to Software forum.

Dunsurfin, thanks a lot, I couldn't figure out what to do with my current program, but as I read what you said I remembered it all and it makes sense to me now.

v00d00, it was the cedega 6.1 beta.

I believe I'm simply typing the wrong line in the command line. I understand the cd part, but as for the ./ configure part I just get "Not a directory" errors. What I believe is as close as I've gotten to was

Code: Select all
cedega # ./cedega_installer.py/ configure
bash: ./cedega_installer.py/: Not a directory

I attached a picture of the folder that contains the file that I believe to be the one that I need. (The readme says to just install the correct tgz/etc for my distribution, and the readme inside of the tgz says that the starter script is Cedega_start, but cedega_start isn't in there to the best of my knowledge)

It could also be a faulty download or the fault of those who I downloaded it from if I'm missing a file or the readme is misleading/wrong, however, as well.

At this point I've basically stopped caring about getting the cedega beta to work, I'm more interested in filling in the gaps in my knowledge, so no big if no one feels like helping with this one o:

--Oh, and sorry about posting it on the wrong forum, thanks for fixing it :)

Thanks Wolfden, didn't work for me (quite a large possibility that I did something wrong, but it says that it worked out alright. Definitely greatful to know how to do that now, though.)

xlnagla, the code you entered seems like it should be working, (here I believe it's the fault of those who gave me the file), but i get this error when I do that:

Code: Select all
python cedega_installer.py
Looking for log.ini file. No CEDEGA_PATH; trying CEDEGA_UPDATER_PATH.
Please set either CEDEGA_PATH or CEDEGA_UPDATER_PATH so I can find the log.ini file.

Is there something that I can do to fix this, or is it purely the fault of myself or those who distributed it to me?

Thanks a lot everyone, definitely filling in the holes in my new-to-linux mind : )

do you know where log.ini is?

export CEDEGA_PATH=<pathtolog>

space between export and CEDEGA, no space otherwise.

Your reccomendation didn't cause an error, but still gives me the same error when I try running python cedega_installer.py, xlnagla.

Seems to be there's nothing I can do about it except try getting a different copy, ah well, thanks anyways : )

Learned quite a bit in this little adventure.

Thanks again to everyone who helped, you were all very nice.
