some secure Skype alternative?

Post by msdobrescu » Thu Feb 07, 2019 17:56

Hi,

Is there some secure Skype alternative?
Is Tox available for Sabayon? Or Jami (formerly Ring)?
Something else?

I'm curious about your solutions.

Regards.

There's signal, or discord, or google hangouts.

The most secure one I know of is signal.

Sorry, I don't trust google hangouts.
Does signal provide video? Yes. But what's the infrastructure?
I have a friend, he has Skype. Few days ago his account was hacked, he was notified, but in the meanwhile, lots of malware links were broadcasted from his account. I know P2P messengers could be "kidnapped" by some "bad" node too, but... I don't know, how could we avoid that?
Also, is it similar to WhatsApp? I've had bad experience with WhatsApp because some contacts were offended by not instantly reacting to their messages and thought I have my phone everywhere with me, so I did not want to respond, in their opinion... Is this the case here too, or could I be offline if I need to? Will people find me with Signal knowing my phone number?
Also, what about this? https://sandervenema.ch/2016/11/why-i-w ... l-anymore/

Seeing the package in Sabayon's repo, what means "bin" at the end? Isn't an open source project?

Hangouts are dead, discord runs on some proprietary servers.

As an alternative wire, jitsy, linphone and riot come to my mind.

Well, as long as I use Sabayon, I need one being in its repo or AppImage, because Flatpack or Snap or whatever other seem not available in the repos, or I can't find them. + an Android version...
Here is something still applicable, I guess: https://blogs.fsfe.org/larma/2017/signal-backdoors/.

If you want to know more about how Signal works, you're going to have to do the research. Your needs sound much more specific and demanding than the average user. That said, here is an article I found very interesting concerning Signal:

The -bin simply means it was precompiled. Gentoo offers a few pre-compiled applications so that users don't have to spend days compiling things. There are some Gentoo overlays if you wish to compile it yourself.

I don't know what to say. Is Signal superior to Tox in security?
People complain about dependency on Google cloud for communication.

You'll have to determine that for yourself. Signal does end-to-end encryption, which is about as secure as you can get. But even if the security is in place on the wire, it's still tied to your phone number. Running it on the desktop requires the app installed on your phone, and I don't know if there are any other caveats.

Then what's wrong with Tox?

I never said anything is wrong with Tox, did I? But it's not in entropy, which I thought was something you were looking for.
