REISER4 support for root and boot filesystem

Postby Vipulkit » Tue Aug 07, 2007 6:01

Please add reiser4 support for root "/" and "/boot" filesystem
in the installer.

so that grub can boot kernel image from a resier4 partition

or suggest me a Linux distro that can boot from a system dat only hav reiser4 partitions
and supports reiser4 at the time of disk partitioning during installation.

Gentoo

get yourself reiser4-support via http://www.namesys.com, RIP LiveCD and several others support reiser4,

please do yourself a favor and don't use reiser4 on /boot

Raiser4 support should be good for us and for Sabayon as well!

Logically it doesnt mean that i want resier4 on my /boot partition ........

it actually means that ...... i m intrstd in single partition installation

so /boot will reside in / ........and hence grub must support reiser4

Although Reiser4 was very, very close to getting into stable last year, the Reiser4 project descended into instability due primarily to the uncertainty surrounding Hans Reiser's legal problems. It may not be fair, but that is just the way it is. Not only has there been no progress on pushing Reiser4 forward to the stable tree, but the project appears to have slid into reverse as critical support from the kernel development community just disappeared. Reiser4 seems to have been dropped like a hot potato from the scene.

True, and thats why you'll probably never see reiser4 in the kernel.

If you really want kernel support, patch it yourself, its not that hard.

I would have expected more empathy for the Reiser4 file system from someone who's user name is c0nv1ct. :)

yup i have tried reiser4 yesterday , by patching the linux kernel ,compiling and then transfering the install image on reiser4 partition.

and my experience was very good , very fast as compared to ext3 .

I am vry unhappy with the politics in the core kernel team against "Hans Reiser work" .

but Hans Reiser is too responsible for the same .......... because he abruptly discontinued reiser3fs support and bug fixing.

How a linux team can consider a fs that hav good no of bugs and can be discontinued abruptly.

"What happened later on" is that the reiser3 developers moved on to reiser4; not only did they stop maintaining the code, but they actively opposed updates made to the code by other developers. At this point, reiser3 is almost entirely maintained by non-Namesys developers. In the future, the same thing may well happen with reiser4.
