How do you update programs

Post by Sir_Sid » Sun Mar 25, 2007 0:33

I used to use ubuntu before I switched over to sabayon. They had two things I was wondering

One was something called the symantic packet manager or something like that. Basically it was a packet manager that allowed you to see what programs you had installed, which ones were available in the repository, and which ones needed updates. Is there a similar program in sabayon?.

Also there was a command i could type which would sync the repos and also apply updates. (aptget commands). Are there similar commands in sabayon.

Im still a little unfamiliar with the gentoo setup so bear with me :D

Please Read This Thread:

It has links to great resources

The Gentoo Handbook, Wiki and SL Wiki are must bookmarks and everything is covered on how to manage your system.

Very Basics

emerge --sync --- for sync portage
layman -S -- update overlays

emerge package -- install package
emerge -u package -- update package

emerge -C package -- uninstall package

but see the link above for more info

short and sweet

emerge --sync && layman -S && emerge portage

update/install individual apps as needed. User Kuroo to look at the portage tree, use command line "emerge package" to get them.
