New Beryl just hit Sabayon Linux overlay

Post by automan » Thu Feb 01, 2007 2:05

Sabayon Linux, the official distro of Beryl, has just added the Beryl 0.9999.1 to their portage overlay and it is very impressive. To install, update portage/layman and "emerge beryl". Restart Beryl and you are done.

enjoy, everyone.

Just installed !!

I think this must be the most stable one to date! It doesn't crash each time I select a plugin. (I was just getting use to that feature  )

I'm waiting or the "tabbed windows" feature to arrive http://forum.beryl-project.org/viewtopi ... =36&t=2951 and apparently someone wrote an application switcher that rotated the thumbnails in a circle, instead of in a line. Am yet to see that though.

Dave

edit: just found the rotating application switcher http://forum.beryl-project.org/viewtopi ... =37&t=2907.
Now I'm happy :P

Sorry to be dense ... but what is different?

I can't get the new settings thing installed (says core is missing) and i can't claim i'm noting much difference (that said only been running it for a short time).

This must be the 0.2.0 release candidate, hence the 9999 bit.

I've installed it, a big improvement over 0.1.4 I think. No more OOo window problems and my multiple desktops are working correctly again, I think because there is now a dependency (though not in the ebuild, it needs adding) libgsf on compiling and it actually errors out this time rather than continuing and not working.

Only problem I get is the beryl-settings tool isn't working for me:

Code: Select all

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File "/usr/bin/beryl-settings", line 1928, in ?
    makeCategoryArea(Category)
File "/usr/bin/beryl-settings", line 1704, in makeCategoryArea
    CatBasePixbuf = gdk.pixbuf_new_from_file_at_size("%s/%s"%(BaseDir,CatImages[Category.Name]),IconSize,IconSize)
gobject.GError: Unrecognized image file format
:?

What do you need to do other than "emerge beryl" and delete the home file?

after running 0.1.9999.1 for a day i'd recommend sticking with 0.1.99.2
lots of unstableness with newest

davemc if emerge beryl doesn't pull everything in for you, you may need to do emerge beryl beryl-settings beryl-core ..etc..

i just did emerge =beryl-0.1.99.2 though

I just did an emerge beryl and everthing seemed to go allright. The new splash screen shows up and it appears to be working smoothly. I didnt even rm the beryl file this time because it appears its not necessary this time around. What I did notice right away though, was that annoying NVIDIA screen black out bug for the first time ever when I tested the raindrop effects. I turned off the mipmapping and all seems to be OK now. Try giving that a shot if your on an NVIDIA card.
