Re: Feedback wanted: Relaunch coming soon

Post by Ryuno-Ki » Sun Jun 17, 2018 22:05

Good evening,

I took some time to look into what I can fix easily. Following changes will be rolled out this night:
  • Direct link from homepage to Desktop flavour download
  • Direct link from homepage to Latest press release
  • Auto-compute of year in footer for copyright
  • Muted colour of button for download on homepage
  • Current wallpaper in former laptop UI
Following is still left open:
  • Scaling of font
  • Scaling of main navigation (see at top in press release view, for example)
  • List of mirrors (Fix didn't apply. Meh :-/ )
If you find more or have other suggestions, please write them down.

You is working on the site.

Please, see the Bug that i reported, some Sabayon Mirrors, do no more have active FTP protocol.

seems that FTP is discontinued in these mirrors:

Hi,

thanks for reporting.

Fixed it together with the mirrors. For entropy, I assigned it to the person in charge.

Open issues:
  • Improve UI on contribution (et al) pages (ideas wanted!)
  • Scaling of font
  • Scaling of main navigation (see at top in press release view, for example)
  • Add Patreon and LiberaPay to donate page
  • Add privacy notice section and link to it from every site
I would like to reach a state where it is „good enough” to be launched. Perfect could be a work of months …

It seems functional. I still like the style of the current site better, but I suppose that's just a personal taste.

The link to the latest press release doesn't work right though.

Hi, Stupot,

would be handy if you could go into more detail what you like on the current site. (I heard that argument before)
Yeah, it is taste. But I'm not that good of a designer.
So help is welcome here :-)

Or asked differently:
What sites do you like? Why?

I can look into what's possible then (and explain why not, if it isn't).

Regarding the design choices … I've listed some parts of my research in Distribution websites - pros and cons. Feel free to continue discussion there, too.

Fixed tonight:
  • Scaling of main navigation (see at top in press release view, for example)
  • Add Patreon and LiberaPay to donate page
Left open:
  • On donate page, the text does not wrap for mobile viewport (look at crypto section)
  • Improve UI on contribution (et al) pages (ideas wanted!)
  • Scaling of font
  • Add privacy notice section and link to it from every site (forums, website, wiki, bugzilla, …)
Since I don't have any cryptocurrencies … how do you deal with it normally? Do you type it? Scan a QR code? I have no idea …

I'll try and list some of the things that pop out to me. I'm not a designer either, but I'd like to think I can spot some nice designs when I see them.

The old site didn't put things into boxes. next.sabayon.org has everything in a box. The horizontal dividers make sense, but why do we need vertical dividers on the left and right side, to box that content in. That seems like a very old style of website.
https://www.archlinux.org/ doesn't do that, at least not on their homepage. Even on pages like https://wiki.archlinux.org/ where a lot of the content is boxed in, there is still content on the non-boxed in part.

https://www.gentoo.org/ doesn't do it. https://www.ubuntu.com/ doesn't do it.

They just use whitespace to clearly separate different sections of the homepage. But boxing everything in is prevalent in every page on next.sabayon.org That's only thing that really irritates me. Again, maybe it's a personal taste thing, but I see more and more sites moving towards using whitespace and natural changes instead of hard lines and boxed in text to separate different content. And that's what the current site does better.

Hi, I hope I won't upset you too much, but, currently, the looks of the new site is to me like ... back to 1986.
I know it is not constructive to say that without pointing to some alternative, but I'm in true zen right now, after seeing it.

Hi Ryuno-Ki, my suggestion would be to drop the serif font and use all sans serif font throughput. Sans serif looks more modern.
