ATI video not available

Post by BobStockdale » Sun Jan 14, 2018 13:55

Recently did a fresh install on my HP laptop. I prefer to have multiple desktops to keep things separate. I installed Sabayon gnome and then the cinnamon desktop. I've use it and mate before with multiple desktops. The current installation doesn't provide the multiple desktops. After further investigation I found:

eselect opengl list
Available OpenGL implementations:
[1] nvidia
[2] xorg-x11 *

I then looked to see that the ATI drivers were installed and they are. So why don't they show up with the eselect command?

Proprietary ATI-drivers (FGLRX) were dropped several months ago 'cause they are not supported by current xorg-server.

amdgpu opensource drivers are supported.

The amdgpu drivers are installed. They don't show up with "eselect opengl list". So how do I select it? Additionally, why would nvidia driver be installed on a system that doesn't have a nvidia processor?

This is expected behavior for AMD OpenSource drivers.

[2] xorg-x11 *

Is correct.

Ok. So how do I get the multiple virtual desktops? The graphical display setting app only has selections for setting how icons are displayed.

That Depends.. Which Desktop Environment are you using?

Also what is the graphic card you're using? (only reason I ask, is that's the difference between using Open source radeon or Open source AMDGPU currently)

cpu is AMD A8-4500M APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics
These are the installed DEs:
ls -hal /usr/share/xsessions
total 76K
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 4.0K Jan 13 06:57 .
drwxr-xr-x 296 root root 12K Jan 14 08:53 ..
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 268 Dec 17 15:44 cinnamon2d.desktop
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 155 Dec 17 15:44 cinnamon.desktop
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 13 Oct 27 2016 default.desktop -> gnome.desktop
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5.0K Aug 27 10:19 gnome-classic.desktop
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 5.6K Aug 28 07:05 gnome-custom-session.desktop
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4.6K Aug 28 07:05 gnome.desktop
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4.6K Aug 28 07:05 gnome-xorg.desktop
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1.4K Sep 18 2016 LXDE.desktop
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 198 Jul 20 2015 openbox.desktop
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 202 Jul 20 2015 openbox-gnome.desktop
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 189 Jul 20 2015 openbox-kde.desktop
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 229 Nov 5 16:43 Xsession.desktop

It shows that the default is gnome however, I am using cinnamon.

Ok, the apu uses the Radeon driver. As for changing our switching workspaces in cinnamon, Ctrl+Alt+ (left or right).

If there are multiple desktops, that would be one way to switch between them. However, there is only one desktop. Until I get multiple desktops, I can't switch between them. Recently I added the Mate desktop and got multiple desktops. I would like to do this with Cinnamon.

$ gsettings get org.cinnamon.desktop.wm.preferences num-workspaces
