Initramfs problem

Post by TeeJay76 » Fri Apr 08, 2016 16:02

Hello,
I'm not sure this is the proper place or this is the proper way to report a problem but initramfs has been broken for weeks.
I just installed the 4.5 kernel and the corresponding initramfs seems to be still broken because it's lacking the i915 firmware files.

In fact, /lib/firmware/i915 contains three dangling links

lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19 Apr 8 16:51 bxt_dmc_ver1.bin -> bxt_dmc_ver1_06.bin
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 19 Apr 8 16:51 skl_dmc_ver1.bin -> skl_dmc_ver1_26.bin
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 18 Apr 8 16:51 skl_guc_ver4.bin -> skl_guc_ver4_3.bin

but the linked files are nowhere to be found inside initramfs.

Try to re-install the linux-firmware package with broken files :

Code: Select all

# equo i -a sys-kernel/linux-firmware-20160223
Ciao.

I don't think that's a fix. The files are actually present in the proper location on the root filesystem. The problem is that the files are missing inside /boot/initramfs-genkernel-x86_64-4.5.0-sabayon, as they were missing in /boot/initramfs-genkernel-x86_64-4.4.0-sabayon too.

For what concerns me I already solved the issue by uncompressing initramfs, adding the proper firmware files and creating a working initramfs. So, basically, I'm just trying to report a long standing problem to help others and suggest the maintainer to fix it but I've already dealt with it.

Peraltro, sto forum è in italiano o in inglese?

confirm :

contents of cpio archive (initramfs) (Xfce-daily)

Code: Select all

/home/ISOBOOT/cpio/lib/firmware/i915 $ ls -lh
totale 0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 sabayonino users 19 19 mar 22.30 bxt_dmc_ver1.bin -> bxt_dmc_ver1_06.bin
lrwxrwxrwx 1 sabayonino users 19 19 mar 22.30 skl_dmc_ver1.bin -> skl_dmc_ver1_23.bin
lrwxrwxrwx 1 sabayonino users 18 19 mar 22.30 skl_guc_ver4.bin -> skl_guc_ver4_3.bin
instead

Code: Select all

$ ls  /lib/firmware/i915
bxt_dmc_ver1_04.bin  bxt_dmc_ver1_06.bin  skl_dmc_ver1_23.bin  skl_dmc_ver1.bin       skl_guc_ver1.bin    skl_guc_ver4.bin
bxt_dmc_ver1_05.bin  bxt_dmc_ver1.bin     skl_dmc_ver1_26.bin  skl_guc_ver1_1059.bin  skl_guc_ver4_3.bin

links are broken . no .bin firmwares

but i915 is loaded as module

Code: Select all

zcat /proc/config.gz | grep I915
CONFIG_DRM_I915=m
# CONFIG_DRM_I915_PRELIMINARY_HW_SUPPORT is not set
CONFIG_SND_HDA_I915=y

kernel 4.3 should work fine wrt i915, can you confirm? seems a regression on linux-firmware, we are not alone:

Yes, the problem showed up sometime around when the 4.4.x kernels came out and I've been patching my initramfs since then.

The 4.3.x kernel had different issues (mostly skylake related, oopses every now and then) but the bundled initramfs was fine.
