Sabayon screwed after last night's updates [Solved]

Post by Richlion » Tue Jan 27, 2015 12:47

Hello,

just yesterday I received about 36 updates. When I rebooted my machine it ended up displaying tons of errors in an endless loop, no login. I tried the "recover" modes, nothing that would let me login, just an endless loop of errors. Is this another case of a non-weekly update rendering the system unusable?
So far I only have 1 laptop affected, so I'll disable updates on other machines, but it looks like I am gonna have to make a full installation from scratch, as without any login I can't even perform any fixes.

Any ideas?

If you don't provide useful information nobody is going to be able to help you.

- What repositories are you using?
- What video graphics drivers?
- GDM/KDM/LightDM/Slim?
- Plasma Desktop (KDE) / GNOME / Xfce / ....?

Are you using Nvidia?
Sabayon x64 Xfce main
Intel core i5 M-520
linux-sabayon 3.15.0

I use the Rigo application which I believe uses Equo.
- What video graphics drivers?
NVidia on an HP laptop
- GDM/KDM/LightDM/Slim?

KDE Desktop

If there are any log files, I would have to boot from a live DVD to navigate, I am not to sure what logfiles could be useful.

You didn't understand joost's question.

To find the repositories you are using, use the following commands:

Code: Select all

# equo repo list
# equo status
To see what graphics driver you are using and which graphics driver(s) you have got installed, use the following commands:

Code: Select all

# grep LoadModule /var/log/Xorg.0.log
# equo search --installed nvidia-drivers
# equo search --installed ati-drivers
# equo search --installed xf86-video-
To see what Display Manager you are using:

Code: Select all

# systemctl | grep -i 'display\|dm'
The Desktop Environment I think you know!

A workaround is:
1) Edit file /etc/entropy/packages/package.mask
2) Insert this line:
x11-drivers/nvidia-userspace
x11-drivers/nvidia-drivers
Save and exit
3) reboot
4) equo update
5) equo upgrade --ask
Ciao

Hello,

I don't think you all noticed in my original post (hence the word "screwed" in the subject):
errors in an endless loop, no login. I tried the "recover" modes, nothing that would let me login, just an endless loop of errors
I cannot login at all in any mode and run any commands, CTRL+ALT+DEL allows me to reboot and go back the the endless loop of errors. The only option I have now is start the Live DVD and access my hard drives, then I can use basic UNIX commands in a console, browse/edit config files, but I don't think the Equo command would work. Unless I am mistaken.

The last option I have is to reinstall the whole system.

Thanks, I'll try that using the Live DVD, I hope this works.

If that does not work, you can try chrooting into the HDD installation from the LiveDVD: Sabayon Linux Wiki - HOWTO: chroot from a LiveCD.

Hi everyone, this is my first post, so please be forgiving. :)

I had the same issue after last update, but I managed to solve it by compiling nvidia kernel module(340.65) on my own and without using LiveCD.

To boot Sabayon without nvidia driver simply edit bootloader kernel options (you can do it in GRUB) by adding:

Code: Select all

modprobe.blacklist=nvidia
Of course, X.org won't start, but you should be able to run Sabayon in recovery mode and change graphics driver to nouveau or vesa at least.
