Sabayon didn't workout in my case.

Postby way12go » Mon Apr 21, 2014 10:57

Sabayon didn't workout in my case.

I installed Sabayon 14.01 Gnome main edition on my latest samsung laptop and it didn't even boot, it did boot from usb pen drive.

That was a month ago.

I tried XFCE Forensics and it did boot from DVD didn't install.

Today I downloaded SABAYON KDE April 20 2014 Daily latest and did md5 on download and on burned copy no errors...

And, when I boot from dvd it went to kernal panic mode 5 times - I tried 5 times. I tried safemode and DVD runs but blank screen and dvd stops running and nothing.

What a waste.

It will surely not work on my little bit older desktop.

Kernal panic does that mean hardware is not suitable?

What a waste.

I will use Bodhi linux and never use any other distro... never

Sabayon never.

I thought Sabayon is number one, the best but, it never worked.

Screaming is definitly bad manners.

If you need help, you could post information about your machine : what model, cpu, memory, type of disk, etc.
With this information we could help...

I use sabayon and I never (and I mean never) had the type of problem you had. So we are all interested to know what configuration could lead to hell like this. And it may help improve sabayon.

Sorry for you trouble

So long ...

Re: SABAYON IS WASTE OF TIME AND EFFORT - IN MY CASE - GOODB

Postby Stupot » Mon Apr 21, 2014 16:52

From what I've read, there was an issue with the 3.14 kernel that caused some people issues, which is the default kernel in the dvd images at the moment. However, there is a fixed version of the kernel 3.14-r1 making it's way down, but it's not there yet.

I don't know why there were issues with Sabayon 14.01 Gnome edition.

But I'm inclined to agree with others that have posted here. The way your first post was put together doesn't make me want to help you. I see it's a common trend for you actually. There's no need to post in giant colored fonts.

In the meantime, don't use the daily DVD until this package is in sabayon-weekly repo: https://packages.sabayon.org/quicksearc ... r1&x=0&y=0

I'm no expert with Sabayon (or with Gentoo). Hasn't always been smooth-sailing, but I've had Sabayon running here since June 2012 without seeing these kinds of problems. It might be worth it to you stick with it for awhile, but that's up to you, of course.

Why pick on Sabayon? You should test many of the other ones on distro watch and give them equal attention. All distros have issues because they share the kernel and hundreds of libraries. Volunteers do a fantastic job managing the growing complexity.
Sabayon 14.07+ (XFCE), Zotac ION330, Zotac ION220, HVR-1950, 950Q

May be avoid latest version for now.

Since you told us that it was a latest Samsung laptop, did you turned off "secure boot" in the bios and allowed legacy boot ?
This could be a major problem.

I suspect something is not correctly set in the bios. It seems to be a fairly standard Intel processor and it should work with Sabayon 14.01 for sure. Did you wipe the disk before ? Is there another OS still on it ? What type of segfault did you get from the kernel ? Any error messages ? What type of partitioning system was used : gpt ?

The more info you give, the more we can help!

Bernard

Dear Bernard,

You completely got me. I have little idea of what you typed. 14.01 Gnome fresh install, straight install without any modifications, entire hdd was used and harddisk doesn't boot and boot menu showing boot from hdd or cd pops up.

Daily KDE 20/April/2014 and boot from dvd works and click on start [first option - Sabayon Start] kernal panic.

I fell in love with Sabayon without using it on harddisk. I only booted 14.01 Gnome from usb pendrive and I used second time the other version, the Xfce Forensics daily edition from DVD boot... no problems with that what so ever. 14.01 Gnome office was missing? Others said they had office... probably something went wrong.

I fell in love with Sabayon because of two reasons I love most...

Reason 1: Out of the box.... problem Xfce Forensics is not out of the box, it has no office and no pdf reader. I hate other non out of the box distros because there is some serious work to do... need to install this or that and shouldn't miss anything.

Reason 2: Rolling release. I am an update junky... I always update, update and update so this really turned me on.

Sorry guys for bashing Sabayon. This is my personal experience, a total bad one.

Thanks.
