FFMPEG

Postby sebaro » Fri Jan 03, 2014 10:35

Hi,

Many distributions have decided to use Libav after the FFMPEG has been forked.
I don't understand why, FFMPEG has more features and merges from Libav but not vice-versa. So why is Libav preferred?

A Debian user filed a Request For Package bug for FFMPEG:

One of the Gentoo developers is also a Libav developer.

Although in Gentoo it's still possible to choose between ffmpeg or libav by using the virtual/ffmpeg ebuild. In the Gentoo installation on my main PC, for example, I stayed with ffmpeg and avoided libav. So, in principle, it would be possible for SL to use ffmpeg instead of libav, but, in the case of a binary distribution, the choice is taken by the distribution's developer(s).

I think a distribution's developers should ask people if they want ffmpeg or libav, systemd or openrc etc. Maybe I'm wrong.

If I remember right, the devs already stated in the past, that the development of this distro is not democracy;)

From the Wiki:
What Sabayon Linux is NOT
..
It is NOT developed with politics in mind. This means that if we like an application over another, it's just because it could work better and be closer to our OOTB philosophy described above.

After installing ffmpeg from portage is it possible to make equo use it instead of libav?
equo i -a ffmpeg
