Cannot enter user interface by booting from USB [Solved]

Post by lukchiuwing » Thu Jul 25, 2013 22:56

Hi,

I use 'dd' to write the ISO to the USB stick, but cannot get it boot in to LiveCD or Installer. It got halted showing 'waiting for boot device'...

Any idea what's wrong and how to fix it?

Or is it a must to burn it on DVD?

Thanks in advance.

Hallo Lukchiuwing.
Welcome to Sabayon.
But due to you don't mention, which iso, which Desktop you want to install, I'd just suggest you to download one of the smallest iso-images from here:
http://sabayon.org/download
e.g. this (Mate)
ftp://ftp.nluug.nl/pub/os/Linux/distr/s ... 6_MATE.iso
and copy that image to USB-Stick again:
The code in (root) konsole should be:

Code: Select all

dd if=Sabayon_Linux_13.04_x86_Mate.iso of=/dev/sdx
while x is the letter of your USB-memory stick. You can check in root console with:

Code: Select all

fdisk -l
Then check your BIOS for Booting from USB!.
Boot again and see, system is booted from stick now.
This will give you the way.
Then choose your own flavour (KDE, Gnome) and download the image eventually again.
And do the same with the MATE iso in the example above.
I wish you much success.

It's definitely not necessary to waste a DVD. You can burn the PLOP boot manager on a mini CD and use it to boot anything from your USB stick, regardless whether your mainboard supports booting from USB or not.

Hi all,

Thanks for the reply. Sorry that I didn't make my question clear.

The problem is I can BOOT the USB, but cannot enter the user interface.

Below is what I did:

1. I downloaded both GNOME and KDE 64bit ISO.
2. Then I use 'dd' command to dump the ISO on my USB stick (I've tried both, 1 by 1).
3. I can boot the USB and see the grub menu to make selection.
4. However, neither choosing Boot LiveCD nor Installer can take me to the user interface. After some command lines, the system stopped at the message showing 'waiting for boot device / media'.

I have no issue booting other distro ISO from my USB by 'dd'.

Thanks.

Finally, I got it work by switching to another USB stick. It still shows the 'waiting for boot medium' message, but it continues to boot after waiting about 1 minutes.
