Dual boot with Windows 8

Postby msdobrescu » Wed Jun 05, 2013 7:24

Hello,

I've got a new notebook and I wish to install Windows 8 along with Sabayon.
I also need to have Sabayon partition first, then Windows 8, and boot from grub, not from Windows boot loader.
Does anybody know how to install in this manner, as Windows 8 creates a hidden reserved partition used for fast boot and it is known that it could lead to unbootable Windows in dual boot?

Thank you.

This HOWTO says it's just for up to Windows 7, but Windows 7 creates hidden partitions as well, so it might be applicable for Windows 8:

So far, I have created, using GParted live CD, three partitions, first for Sabayon, second for Windows 8, last as ext4, to be sure it is alien to Windows and won't create its default setup.
I have installed Windows 8 and it worked as expected.
I'll install Sabayon next, so I expect some trouble with dual boot (from Windows 8 part).

As note to above article, I already have a Sabayon + Windows 7 setup, since grub 1, now grub 2. I did not need EasyBCD at all.

Hello,

I see here and here that efi and secure boot work on Sabayon, I still have questions:
  • First, how and what's the preferred setup?
  • Is the installer able to setup an EFI+secure boot and is this configuration upgradeable using the regular tools and channels (entropy & co)?
  • Is it possible using the EFI partition made by Windows 8 to dual-boot from that partition using GRUB?
  • Is this the case, as Windows case, which neea specia EFI boot medium?
  • How could it be done using a USB flash?

Here is a technique to achieve what I need, but I think it is complicate to maintain.

So, the setup asks for grub to be installed on /dev/sda or on the Sabayon partition, /dev/sda2. Is this right?
I have an EFI partition, but it seems to ignore it.
Is there something special about making the install media, for instance on USB flash drive, in order to install the boot on the EFI partition, or about defining the installation partitions? Or should I boot in a special way from the EFI BIOS?

I've managed to make the flash stick to be booted as uefi.
It seem to fail installing the on efi partition as an error occurs. It states that fstab is wrong due to the efi partition. It expects it to be VFAT, but finds FAT32 (this is VFAT extension).
What to do?

So, I couldn't make it run.

Right now, I need a minimum partitioning for booting it.
My BIOS is EFI and the makers removed the option of backward compatibility and legacy BIOS modes.
The secure boot can not be disabled also, but I think this is not the issue.

In an EFI setup, what is the minimum partitoning scheme, without LVM, preferably?

So, the system gives "reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media" all the time I restart.
I can't make installed Sabayon start.

Should I try efibootmgr?

As nobody cares and I can't make it boot, I have to stick with Windows only...

....but no! NO! NO! I can't give up!
I have the choice to make some custom entry to the EFI and it can boot, although booting Windows is not an option in grub now.
