No activity recently

Hi,

It looks like recently there is not much activity in SL !
I was thinking of a bleeding edge distro but for exemple Firefox is still 18 and KDE 4.10 is still not in available in standard repo.
SL is based on unstable gentoo and both are released for some time on gentoo (kde even had a quick fix after 4.10 buggy release).
I had some package activity around 26/02 and before 22/02 but it looks like there is some sleeping state in SL.
Am i too impatient or what ?

Patience is a virtue. :P

Having it available in gentoo unstable doesn't mean that it's possible to compile it in such a way that it works nicely for every machine. Trust me when I say that things are being worked on in the testing repo. They will be pushed out soon enough. I'm sure you would much rather having a Firefox 18 and KDE 4.9.5 that works well than unstable versions.

Firefox 19 is the latest in the gentoo database also.

Also, i'm a beta tester of Mozilla. Firefoxes versions 19,20, 21 and 22 have some XUL errors and some compatibility errors in Flash Player, and there are at this moment, not easy in routine uses, as see videos, listen radio etc...

I have the versions 21 and 22 installed, precompiled and ina testing dir, and even this message is written using SeaMonkey, since new firefoxes are no so stable in this moment

Finally KDE 4.10 came out tonight on SL.
But there were planty of update together, difficult to follow.
I notice that 2 versions of gcc where upgraded :
Code: Select all
>>  ## [U] [sabayonlinux.org] sys-devel/gcc-4.5.4|1   [4.5.3-r2|0]
>>  ## [U] [sabayonlinux.org] sys-devel/gcc-4.6.3|2   [4.6.3|0]

I find out that I have 3 versions on my system.
I try to remove the oldest one but equo complains about revdeps.
I found some intersting informations here : http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/gcc-upgrading.xml

But why do I need to have 3 gcc installed ?
I am curious to know, is this some gentoo dependancies that may not be used for precompiled os like SL or is that really needed to run my system ?
My system is now taking 18Gb which is quite big, i'll be please to do some cleanup as well.

Code: Select all
# equo cache clean && equo cleanup
Also look for installed software that doesn't fit with your needs/HW (how many kernel versions do you have?).

This doesnt change that much.
If I could clean up some non used packages like this gcc versions or others that have been installed as dependencies and not used anymore it could help.
SL has always been a bit fat comparing to others distro ... I would like to understand why !

I dig up a bit further to extract the biggest packages over 500MB :
Code: Select all
522.4MB app-emulation/wine-1.5.24
628.4MB mail-client/thunderbird-17.0.3
704.6MB www-client/firefox-18.0.1
811.7MB sys-devel/gcc-4.5.4
906.0MB sys-devel/gcc-4.6.3

they are all very very big is it !
But when I dig further down on firefox file size I have roughly 80MB (calculate size of all files in the package).
Strange strange
